Jane Fonda has made her position unmistakably clear: her friendship with David Ellison changes nothing about her opposition to the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. The two-time Oscar winner addressed the deal with a small group of journalists in Venice, where warmth toward an old collaborator and worry over an entire industry seemed to coexist without contradiction. Her remarks landed as the merger already faces resistance from several fronts, sharpening an already tense conversation around its future.
While Fonda kept her praise for Ellison genuine, she left little room for sentiment when explaining exactly why the merger still troubled her deeply.

Jane Fonda made clear that her closeness to David Ellison does not soften her stance on the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. The remarks came just before she was honored at the DVF Awards gala in Venice, hosted by designer Diane von Furstenberg.
"You know, it's sad for me because I like David Ellison very much," she said, as per Variety.
She added, "But that doesn't change things. This is not a personal thing. This is what it will do to the entertainment industry, which is already suffering terribly," underlining that principle outweighed personal history.

According to Variety, Fonda extended her argument beyond personal ties, warning that the merger would raise prices for consumers while costing thousands of jobs across the industry. She noted that fewer studios mean fewer buyers for creative work, weakening bargaining power for both talent and unions alike. Fonda also invoked her former partner Ted Turner, arguing he would be heartbroken to see Paramount potentially controlling CNN, a network he once refused to sell easily. Her comments framed the deal as a structural threat rather than a one-time business decision.
As Fonda warned about damage to the industry, David Ellison is countering with a written promise intended to prove otherwise.
David Ellison hinges Paramount's future on a written 30 film pledge
Paramount has reportedly agreed to sign three-year contracts with major theater chains, including AMC and Regal, guaranteeing thirty movies annually if the Warner Bros. acquisition closes, according to Bloomberg. Those films would need to stay exclusive to cinemas for at least forty-five days and remain off digital release platforms for ninety days. Failure to meet the commitment would reportedly trigger penalties for Paramount. The pledge turns an executive promise into an enforceable contract, giving exhibitors something concrete to plan around.

The commitment arrives as Paramount prepares to borrow nearly fifty billion dollars to finance the acquisition, even as twelve states pursue legal action to block the deal entirely. Exhibitors remain split: AMC's Adam Aron has backed the merger, while Cinema United continues to resist it publicly. Whether the promise convinces regulators or skeptics like Jane Fonda remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: for her, the friendship with David Ellison was never going to change the outcome.
