In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant at CinemaCon, Shawn Levy broke the ice concerning the central myth surrounding the forthcoming Deadpool & Wolverine in regards to what necessitated the title change from Deadpool 3 to the official one. Levy clarified to avoid any quotient of misdirection that the soon-to-be-released Deadpool & Wolverine is undoubtedly “the third Deadpool movie but it’s not Deadpool 3”. For those curious about the meaning, the movie surely centers on Deadpool but “it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies”.

In essence, although Deadpool takes primacy, it is not inherently just a direct sequel to the previous installments. Moreover, since the film is supposed to be a “two-hander character adventure”, the inclusion of both Deadpool and Wolverine in the title is warranted. Therefore, the decision by the MCU to diverge from the title trend established by Fox's original Deadpool movies reflects a desire to acknowledge the significance of both principal characters, allowing their star power to shine equally in what is poised to be the MCU's flagship film of the year.
