Nothing is normal about the city of Normal in Bob Odenkirk’s action thriller. At first, it appears to be a sleepy, quiet town where nothing ever happens. But unlike what its name suggests, the city becomes the place for drama, conspiracy, crime, and scandal that later takes place in the movie.

That irony may have been exactly what the film’s director and writer intended. What makes it even more interesting is that there is no city called Normal in Minnesota. While Normal, Minnesota does not exist, the filmmakers carefully selected locations and landscapes across the globe that could portray both the peacefulness and underlying mystery of the fictional city, Normal.

The action-comedy film Normal was mostly filmed in and around Winnipeg, as well as several other locations across Manitoba, Canada. Starbuck, Carberry, Selkirk, Winnipeg Beach, and West St. Paul were among the locations used for filming. People around the area also spoke about the production to local news outlet CTV News Winnipeg.

For those who are unaware, the film follows the mysterious city of Normal, where a newly arrived interim sheriff is forced to confront his past while dealing with residents’ nuisance reports. However, things take a turn after a robbery attempt, leading him to find issues that force him to investigate further. The movie was released in the US in April 2026.

Now for Bob Odenkirk, filming in Winnipeg for Normal was not a new experience. The actor had previously visited the city to film his action movie Nobody and its sequel, Nobody 2, which was released in 2025. Winnipeg’s vast landscapes and beaches became the perfect background for both films.

But the bigger question is whether Odenkirk will return for another Normal movie. Many viewers have drawn comparisons between Normal and Nobody and questioned if the two are connected, although director Ben Wheatley has made it clear that they are not. While there is no official update on a sequel yet, Wheatley has expressed interest in expanding Normal into a franchise.

As for the confusion surrounding Normal and Nobody, Odenkirk has also shared his take on how the two films differ.

Bob Odenkirk explained how Normal differs from Nobody

There is a good reason why people confuse Normal with Nobody. Both films were written by screenwriter Derek Kolstad. However, as Bob Odenkirk has clarified, the two movies differ in both tone and storytelling, with the action-comedy Normal leaning more heavily into suspense.

“But the first thing I said [to Derek Kolstad] was, this has an M. Night Shyamalan-kind of level of suspense and mystery. There's a sustained sequence of figuring out what really is going on, including some major red herrings," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Bob Odenkirk brings two very different characters to life in the two films. Although both are action movies, Normal and Nobody have different identities. Normal follows a sheriff in an unfamiliar city, while Nobody is about a suburban father hiding a dark past. While Winnipeg could once again serve as a filming location if a Normal sequel moves forward, there is currently no official release date or confirmation for the movie.
