Hollywood projects usually begin under stringent planning and plotting, especially when two ginormous stars collide in a single project. Through their collaborative efforts, they not only discover exceptional results but also each other, former life-long bonds of admiration or hearty friendships. In the case of Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman, however, a series of abrupt Oscar night exchanges and spontaneous events propelled their sisterhood in the new drama Scarpetta, unlike playing by the mechanized rulebook.

Scarpetta, the new television series that Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis developed together, began with their first meeting at the Academy Awards 2021, Lee Curtis recalled in her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Kidman approached Curtis at her seat during the award show, greeted her with inspiring words, which she still keeps in her heart to date. The quick exchange, though brief, was memorable as Curtis later described it as a little bonding between two veteran thespians who had admired each other’s work from afar.

The duo did not know that their minor meeting would create a partnership that would lead to their joint creative work. Fate changed the situation when several months passed with no contact. Curtis had been developing a television adaptation of author Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling crime novels about forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta. Kidman showed interest in the role when she learned about the project; however, she wanted Lee Curtis to star in the drama.

"That's how I am in the show because Nicole Kidman said, you're in it. And you know what, it's called 'The Nicole Kidman Effect.' Right away, we got a two-season pick-up at Amazon," Lee Curtis told Fallon, discussing how her original plan of only producing the drama recoursed to a starring role.

The two actresses worked together in front of the camera and behind the scenes throughout their professional relationship to bring their iconic sisterhood to life on screen. The upcoming drama sees Kidman in the leading role of a medical examiner, while Curtis plays her sister Dorothy, with both actors functioning as executive producers. The chance Oscars encounter between them turned into one of television's most exciting upcoming team projects.
