Nicolas Winding Refn is bringing Maniac Cop back to the big screen, with Mubi on board for the project. Fresh off a thunderous Cannes reception for his long-awaited return, the Danish director has already locked in his next project. The man behind Drive and The Neon Demon is not slowing down, and his next target is a cult classic that has been waiting decades for exactly this kind of treatment.

As Refn takes his Cannes bow, a k***** in uniform is already sharpening his badge for the big screen.

Deadline reported that Nicolas Winding Refn is officially directing a new version of Maniac Cop, the 1988 William Lustig cult slasher, with Mubi fully financing the project and committing to a wide theatrical release. Shooting is set to begin in Los Angeles in January, with casting yet to be announced. Refn will produce through his NWR Originals banner, alongside Executive Producers Christina Erritzøe and Kimberly Willming, while Vincent Maraval executive producers for Goodfellas.

"Maniac Cop in Nicolas's hands is not a remake. It is a resurrection," said Efe Cakarel, Founder and CEO of Mubi, to Deadline.

He then added, "Nicolas has one of the most dangerous imaginations in modern cinema, and he is exactly the filmmaker to reawaken something this iconic."

The project has had a winding road to this point. Originally announced at Cannes 2016 as a feature under director John Hyams, it later transformed into an HBO and Canal+ television series by 2019. Refn has now reclaimed it as a theatrical feature, with Mubi securing distribution across North America, Latin America, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, Australia, and New Zealand.

While the badge has been polished and the distributor locked in, the film that sent Refn back to Cannes deserves equal attention.

Her Private H***, Nicolas Winding Refn's first directorial feature in ten years, premiered at Cannes this week to a 12-minute standing ovation. The sci-fi thriller stars Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu, Kristine Froseth, and Diego Calva, set in a futuristic city where a predatory k***** called the Leather Man hunts women amid a glamorous film shoot. Neon will release it theatrically in North America on July 24.

At Cannes, Refn openly discussed a near-death experience from three years ago, during which he underwent heart surgery and was clinically dead for approximately 20 minutes. That experience reshaped his creative urgency entirely, leading directly to both Her Private H*** and the swift announcement of Maniac Cop. The uniform is coming back, and this time, Refn is the one holding the badge.
