Nicolas Cage is weighing a career move that could have altered his relationship with Christopher Nolan. Speaking to The New York Times, the Oscar-winning actor has recently said that Nolan never asked him to appear in any other film after he turned down a role in Insomnia. Cage then revealed that in Hollywood, saying no to a project can have long-term consequences, and some filmmakers take it personally.

While he happened to be one of a list involving "millions of times" as per Cage, Christopher Nolan's indifference may have perked some ears.

In a detailed interview with The New York Times, talking about his 2026 film Madden, Nicolas Cage revealed that he was surprised David O. Russell offered him the role. This is because the filmmaker had offered Cage a film many years ago that the actor turned down. He further revealed that Russell is the only director Cage has turned down in the past who has come back with another offer, and he loves him for that.

“Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back,” he then admitted. Upon being asked what films these directors offered them, Cage revealed Nolan's was the 2002 film, Insomnia.

After the incident, Cage revealed that Nolan never offered the actor any role. Cage never gave a definitive creative reason as to why he turned down Nolan’s thriller in 2002, other than that he just decided to pass on the project. Eventually, Al Pacino took on the role and played detective Will Dormer, and Cage’s refusal left a permanent rift with Nolan.

Insomnia is not the only major project Cage has spoken about walking away from over the years.

Nicolas Cage has opened up before about the major roles he chose to walk away from

Nicolas Cage had the chance to be the lead actor in two huge film trilogy franchises in the 1990s, and he rejected both of them. Both The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix could have drastically changed the course of his career. Although it is difficult to picture Cage in either Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings or The Wachowskis' The Matrix, Cage had an actual reason for passing up these two sci-fi/fantasy trilogies.

"I turned down Lord of the Rings, and I turned down Matrix because I didn't want to go to New Zealand for three years or Australia for three years because I needed to be home with my son Weston," Cage revealed in a 2022 interview with PEOPLE Magazine. "First and foremost, there's no version of Nick Cage in reality that doesn't want to spend time with his children. There's no version of Nick Cage that didn't put family first over career."

Cage further revealed to PEOPLE at Spider-Noir’s New York City premiere that he passed on the Green Goblin role in 2002’s Spider-Man as well. The role of Norman Osborn in the superhero flick, which ultimately went to Willem Dafoe, was turned down by Cage.

Meanwhile, Cage’s candid thoughts give his fans a rare look at the decisions that have shaped a long career in Hollywood and the fallout that can come with them. His comments suggest that perhaps his refusal to do Insomnia ended his creative partnership with Christopher Nolan. Cage has never stated why he turned the project down, but now seems to see that decision as the turning point, with Nolan never coming back with another offer.
