Nicolas Cage gave Spider-Man a trench coat, a drinking problem, and enough cigarette smoke to trigger every alarm in Manhattan. His black-and-white Spider-Noir stalked 1930s New York with the swagger of an exhausted Humphrey Bogart, following Ben Reilly through grief, crime, and superhero trouble.

The eight-episode experiment earned glowing reviews and 11 Emmy nominations, yet Prime Video pulled the plug in September 2026. Cue the outrage, the petitions, and the violin solo. Except Cage has delivered the strangest plot twist of all: he considers cancellation a blessing.

For this particular web-slinger, disappearing after one season was always part of the appeal.

Nicolas Cage explains why Spider-Noir's cancellation came as a relief

Speaking to IGN while promoting Madden, Nicolas Cage explained that stretching Ben Reilly's peculiar world across multiple seasons risked exhausting its magic.

“You do that Season 2, Season 3, and you could really wear out your welcome,” he said. He called his performance a high-risk tightrope act.

So when the renewal never arrived? Cage's reaction was practically a superhero escape hatch. Somewhere, a television executive probably dropped a spreadsheet. His preference is for compact stories that leave an impression and walk off before the welcome mat catches fire.

Back in September, he had already called one season “perfect,” satisfied that his experimental take on Spider-Man had said its piece. Hollywood supplied one delicious punchline. Two days after cancellation, Spider-Noir won five Creative Arts Emmys, including cinematography, visual effects, sound editing, title design, and stunt coordination. The show departed with more trophies than seasons.

With the web finally folded away, Cage is tackling an entirely different American legend.

Nicolas Cage transforms into an NFL icon in Madden

David O. Russell's Madden follows John Madden from his triumphs coaching the Oakland Raiders to his reinvention as football's booming television voice and the face of the Madden NFL video games. Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis, the larger-than-life figure who shared Madden's championship journey and plenty of professional friction.

The film also features Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Davis' wife Carol, John Mulaney as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, and Shane Gillis. No radioactive spider required for this showdown. Nicolas Cage transformed physically, adding 25 pounds with help from pasta and sourdough bread.

Beyond the transformation, Cage called Madden “a teacher first and foremost,” citing the coach's humor, enthusiasm, and devotion to helping others learn. His own father's teaching background helped him recognize the connection. Madden opens in select theaters November 11 before arriving globally on Prime Video November 18.
