Biopics are a peculiar acting tightrope: the actor has to disappear into a real person without turning the performance into a museum-piece impersonation. From Daniel Day-Lewis reshaping himself into Abraham Lincoln to Rami Malek capturing Freddie Mercury’s physicality and stage presence, the strongest transformations have made the person behind the famous name feel alive rather than merely recognizable. That challenge becomes even trickier when the subject is someone whose voice, mannerisms and public persona are already etched into popular culture.

For Nicolas Cage, however, reinvention has never exactly been an unfamiliar sport. And now, Cage is stepping into one of those roles that demands more than a convincing wig and a familiar cadence: John Madden, the football coach, broadcaster and video game icon.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the official trailer for Madden, giving audiences their first substantial look at Nicolas Cage as the legendary football figure. Directed by David O. Russell, the film traces Madden from his years coaching the Oakland Raiders through his broadcasting career and eventual transformation into the face of the Madden NFL video game franchise. Amazon describes the story as a journey alongside Raiders owner Al Davis, from their Super Bowl-winning partnership to Madden becoming one of football’s most recognizable voices. 

The trailer puts Cage’s transformation front and center. The actor appears bulked up and styled to evoke Madden’s unmistakable look, while the performance leans into the coach’s booming energy and larger-than-life presence. Madden coached the Raiders from 1969 to 1978, led them to victory in Super Bowl XI and later spent three decades as a television football commentator. He eventually lent his name and expertise to EA Sports.

 Madden will open in select theaters on November 11 before arriving globally on Prime Video on November 18.

But Cage is not walking into this transformation alone. Russell has assembled another actor with a particularly deep relationship with the biopic genre.

Christian Bale plays Al Davis, the influential Raiders owner whose partnership with Madden helped define Oakland’s rise during the late 1960s and 1970s. Madden became the Raiders head coach in 1969 at just 32 and eventually led the team to its first Super Bowl victory, giving Bale’s Davis a crucial place in the story. Bale also arrives with plenty of biopic experience, having transformed into real-life figures including Dick Cheney in Vice, a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination.

The cast also includes Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Carol Davis and John Mulaney as EA Sports founder Trip Hawkins. Their characters allow the film to move beyond Madden’s coaching years and into the relationships and career turns that shaped his wider legacy, particularly his transition from the sidelines to television and eventually the Madden NFL video game franchise. With Bale anchoring the Raiders chapter, Cage gets a counterpart who can match the larger-than-life energy surrounding one of football’s most recognizable figures.

With the first trailer finally offering a glimpse at their transformations, the real question is how far Russell’s film will go beyond the familiar Madden image.
