Nick Frost Reveals the Wild Ritual That Landed Him Hagrid in HBO’s New 'Harry Potter'

Prayers seemed to be answered when HBO officially announced a reboot of the Harry Potter TV series with an entirely new cast to play beloved characters. Production is already underway, with the show opening the doors of Hogwarts once again. But the magic may have started working even before filming, as Nick Frost appears to have stumbled upon a little spell of his own.
The actor, who is set to play Hagrid in the upcoming series, recently shared an unusual tradition he followed in hopes of landing the role, and it seems straight out of The Standard Book of Spells itself.

Nick Frost’s first look as Hagrid in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series reboot was revealed shortly after production began, and fans were quick to praise the casting choice. While the role was undoubtedly earned through his acting talent, Frost also did something unusual off-screen. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor shared that he tried to manifest the part.
“I’ve seen all the films. We go through them all as a family during Christmas every year,” Frost said.
“Before I was cast as Hagrid, my partner suggested trying to manifest it. So last Christmas, I watched all the films back to back on the Sky ‘Harry Potter’ channel, while writing out the word ‘Hagrid’ 7,000 times.”
Whether or not that counts as a spell, it clearly shows Frost's dedication to the role, and that will be crucial when he brings the gentle giant Hagrid to life on screen. He even urged fans not to expect a carbon copy of the previous portrayal, while assuring them that he would stay true to the heart of the character. After all, the late Robbie Coltrane was unforgettable as Hagrid on the big screen, and replacing such an iconic actor will not be easy.
As expected, there is already plenty of chatter surrounding the TV series, especially after original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus recently shared his thoughts on the reboot.

In his interview on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, Chris Columbus pointed out that there have been no changes to the characters’ costumes so far. This remark was made after the first look at Nick Frost as Hagrid was released. Dominic McLaughlin, who plays Harry, also appears in the same costume style as Harry did in the original films.
“I thought the costumes and everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same,” he said.

Now, there will be both similarities and differences in the new series, and there is much hype around it. But what seems certain is that the show will offer more exploration and a deeper look at each character, since each book will be adapted into its own season. Whether the new series becomes overly repetitive of the originals or truly does justice to the characters and story remains to be seen.
