According to Deadline, Nicholas Hoult has reportedly been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series. The Superman star will take over the role made famous by Kenneth Branagh in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, playing Hogwarts’ flamboyant Defence Against the Dark Arts professor whose dazzling smile hides a talent for taking credit for other wizards’ achievements.

However, as the Deadline revelation has sparked fresh headlines surrounding the series, season 2 has already been greenlit and is set to begin filming this fall, with the series continuing its plan to adapt one Harry Potter book per season. Dominic McLaughlin leads the new generation as Harry, alongside Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, while Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Janet McTeer as McGonagall return to the Hogwarts halls.

 Hoult’s casting arrives with enormous expectations hanging over Hogwarts, as the original films have turned Harry, Ron, and Hermione into global icons, and every new face now has to survive the unforgiving comparison.

The new series is attempting something the films never could: seven seasons for seven books, giving the story room to restore details and characters that were cut from the movies. That makes Season 2 even more intriguing, as Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton get their first shot at redefining Harry, Ron, and Hermione through the darker halls of Chamber of Secrets. The stakes are enormous; the original eight films earned $7.73 billion worldwide, while Rowling’s seven books have sold more than 600 million copies, leaving this new Hogwarts era with a legendary legacy to live up to.

The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026, setting the stage for Lockhart to make his grand entrance when the Chamber of Secrets opens. Meanwhile, while Potterheads have spent years knowing Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione and Rupert Grint as Ron, the original Golden Trio has long since stepped beyond the Hogwarts gates.
