There is no doubt that the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is soaring to new heights. After opening to a jaw-dropping $97 million at the domestic box office, the film has continued to pull in impressive numbers in theaters. However, one of its crucial cast members, Nia Long, may have been quietly struggling to receive her fair share of the success. 

As per the rumors, the actress has yet to receive her rightful compensation for her role in the Antoine Fuqua-directed movie.

Matt Belloni, in his recent article for Puck, shared the shocking news that Nia Long, who plays Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, in the film, is reportedly in a dispute with Lionsgate over receiving the salary she believes she deserves for her role.

As per the rumors, she had a 'favored nations' clause in her contract, which means she could not be paid less than her co-stars. However, she has reportedly found out that both Colman Domingo and Miles Teller were paid more than her.

It is also rumored that she is considering taking the studio to mediation to resolve the issue and reach a negotiation over her salary. However, there has been no official confirmation or comment from either party. But now, when it comes to her salary, one might argue that her role in the film is smaller compared to her co-stars.

But there is more to the situation. The movie was famously reshot, with several scenes being cut from the original version due to controversy.

It is said that Long originally had longer and more important scenes, many of which were ultimately removed. The actress herself has mentioned this in her interviews.

Nia Long, in her interview with Variety, explained that several scenes were cut from the original version after the production team realized they could not legally depict certain moments. Although she described the cuts as heartbreaking, she seemed satisfied with the revised version. Some of those removed scenes also involved her character.

"That’s part of filmmaking. The performances have to work with the storytelling, and sometimes things change, and it can be heartbreaking, but I’m very happy with the film as it stands today," she said.

She said there were several scenes featuring her and Jaafar Jackson, some of which were filmed at Neverland Ranch. However, she expressed hope that these scenes could be included in a sequel, if one is made. Fortunately, a sequel has been given a green light. But it will ultimately be up to the production company to decide whether those cut scenes might finally see the light of day.
