The Lanterns finale may have closed the book on Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, but showrunner Chris Mundy is refusing to slam it shut completely. Mundy has teased that Hal could still have a future in the DCU, even after the series gave his story a definitive emotional ending. That ambiguity matters because Lanterns has deliberately treated Hal as both a Green Lantern legacy character and the tragic starting point for John Stewart.

But then came the kind of post-finale tease that makes comic book fans immediately start connecting red-string dots.

Chris Mundy leaves the door open for Hal Jordan

In a YouTube video with Brandon Davis discussing Lanterns, showrunner Chris Mundy addressed whether audiences could see Hal Jordan again in the DCU. As reported in the discussion, Mundy stressed that the finale was designed to close Hal and John’s relationship emotionally, while still refusing to make an absolute statement about the character’s future.

“I would never say never to anything,” Mundy said, before explaining that the ending “closed the book on our story for this season.”

That distinction is important. Mundy was not confirming that Hal will return, nor was he teasing a secret resurrection as an established plan. His point, as per the YouTube video, was that Lanterns needed to complete the emotional journey between the two Lanterns, even if the wider DCU eventually finds another chapter for Hal. The finale makes that separation especially clear as John accepts the ring and chooses his own path.

The timing of Mundy’s comments is particularly interesting because the finale did not leave Hal’s fate as a cheap mystery. The real Hal is dead, and the flashbacks reveal that Kerry Kane shot him after he discovered the truth about Noah. Still, the writers left one very comic-book-shaped escape hatch.

Damon Lindelof also refuses to close the door

In a new interview with Collider, departing co-creator and writer Damon Lindelof discussed the possibility of Hal returning in a potential second season. Collider reported that Lindelof was deliberately coy about the future, but he made one thing remarkably clear: the creative team never intended to pull a bait-and-switch by revealing Hal was secretly alive.

Lindelof explained that the team knew bringing Hal back immediately would be the worst kind of “schmuck-bait,” comparing the idea to saying he was a clone or “only mostly dead.” He also pointed to the comics, where Hal has died and returned multiple times, including his famous Parallax storyline.

That makes the finale’s Sinestro scene even more suspicious. Sinestro tells the Halogram that if they have Hal’s ring, he could “bring you back to life for real.” John ultimately takes the ring and charges it using Sinestro’s unusual fear-infused lantern, seemingly closing that particular route. Yet the fact that the line exists at all is difficult to dismiss as random dialogue.

For now, however, Lanterns Season 2 has not been officially announced. John Stewart is the hero who has inherited the immediate future, while Hal remains a closed chapter that Chris Mundy very carefully refuses to call a permanently finished book.

Whether Hal Jordan really returns, or whether Sinestro’s promise becomes one of the DCU’s great unanswered teases, remains to be seen.
