“I want to do my own stunts like Tom Cruise.” he said at the Lanterns panel, before recalling that he was kicked in the knee while working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer when he was 32.

That injury, he joked, changed everything, because the knee has “never been the same” since. He was speaking in the context of a career that already included action-heavy projects, but the message was clear: the days of trying to be a one-man stunt machine are behind him.

“Ever since, a more mature and reasonable Nathan says I can’t wait to see how my stunt double does this.” he added at the same Lanterns panel, drawing the contrast between his younger, more daredevil mindset and the more careful approach he takes now.

On Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fillion’s role as Caleb was brief but memorable, and it came during an especially intense stretch of the show, which makes the injury story fit neatly with the physical demands of that kind of TV production. The joke lands because it mixes ego, pain, and hindsight in one line. Fillion clearly still loves action, but his old Buffy knee injury seems to have ended any fantasy of chasing Tom Cruise-style stunt glory.
