From Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ deathbed farewell to JFK Jr.‘s doomed final flight, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette did not shy away from the family’s most devastating moments. But according to stars Naomi Watts and Paul Anthony Kelly, filming those scenes came with a haunting reality of its own. Perhaps that is one reason the series has resonated so deeply with audiences, becoming one of Hulu’s biggest drama successes and FX’s most-watched limited series on streaming.
For both actors, however, the challenge extended far beyond simply memorizing lines and stepping into character.

Recently, while speaking on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, Naomi Watts opened up about the emotional challenge of filming Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ final moments in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Reflecting on the sequence, Watts described the experience as “spooky,” admitting that stepping into Jackie’s ultimate moments meant confronting the painful reality of leaving loved ones behind.
The actress revealed that both she and Paul Anthony Kelly leaned on music and their own creative rituals to navigate the emotionally heavy sequence, adding that while the goal was to make the moment feel truthful, she never particularly enjoys filming death scenes.
"Slowly dying is more palatable than suddenly dying, I suppose. It's weird. It's definitely spooky, and there's no question, when you walk down that line of imagining what it would be like to leave behind the people you love, obviously you wanna make the moment as truthful as possible". Watts revealed on Entertainment Weekly's The Awardist podcast.
Kelly echoed that sentiment while discussing JFK Jr.‘s tragic final flight, which ended in the fatal 1999 plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard. Describing the shoot as equally “spooky,” the actor recalled the strange challenge of knowing exactly how the story ends while portraying someone who has no idea what lies ahead. Surrounded by cast and crew who understood the significance of the moment, Kelly said the atmosphere on set felt unusually heavy, creating an emotional disconnect that lingered long after the cameras stopped rolling.
While Love Story continues its record-breaking run as FX’s biggest limited series on streaming, the real-life romance at its heart was captivating audiences long before cameras ever started rolling.
The real Love Story behind America’s most fascinating couple
At its core, the series chronicles the whirlwind romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, a relationship that fascinated America throughout the 1990s. The pair first met in 1992, eventually tying the knot in a secret ceremony four years later. But life under an unforgiving media spotlight soon took its toll, with constant paparazzi attention and public scrutiny placing growing pressure on their marriage. Their story ultimately came to a devastating end in July 1999, when John, Carolyn, and her sister Lauren Bessette died in a plane crash en route to Martha’s Vineyard.

Bringing that story to life is a cast led by Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Paul Anthony Kelly as JFK Jr., alongside Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, and Dree Hemingway as Daryl Hannah. The drama has resonated strongly with both critics and audiences, currently holding a Certified Fresh 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many praising its intimate portrayal of one of America’s most iconic couples.
