Andrew Garfield has never shied away from speaking about the grief and pain he felt after losing his mother, Lynn Garfield. But apart from the pain of loss, the actor has also spoken about the love he feels when remembering the time he spent with his mother. And he has often channeled those emotions into his performances.

The same can be said of one of the actor’s most acclaimed performances, in the Oscar-nominated film he shot shortly after his mother’s passing.

Andrew Garfield, in his conversation with Amy Poehler on the Good Hang podcast, spoke fondly about his film Tick, Tick... Boom!. While admitting that he was very proud of the film, the actor opened up about why the project felt so personal to him. He recalled feeling his mother's presence and the character of Jonathan Larson during filming.

"It does feel like that kind of liminal place of letting another spirit move, intermingling with my own spirit, but also my mother's spirit is so much in that film. But it was very, very personal cuz I just lost my mom, and we were making this movie, and it's about the shortness of life," he said.

He further added, "It's about living out your own calling, your own destiny in a way."

The film was shot after Garfield’s mother passed away from pancreatic cancer. As Garfield shared on the Good Hang podcast, this connection helped the actor present one of the most acclaimed performances of his career, eventually earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance.

The film follows Jonathan Larson, a young composer who faces immense pressure as he pours everything he has into achieving success on Broadway before turning 30. The actor portrayed Jonathan Larson’s pain and passion on screen, pulling viewers into the character’s emotional journey. He has often spoken about how Larson’s character and his sense of purpose in the world felt personal to him, and he dedicated his performance to his late mother, Lynn Garfield.

Apart from his career, the actor has often spoken about the impact his mother had on his life.

Andrew Garfield, during his interview on The Spiritual Life podcast, opened up about the impact his mother had on him while growing up. He recalled that his mother had an innate ability to love and care for people and every living creature. He added that Lynn Garfield never lost that quality, even during times when she herself was struggling.

"She was someone who just innately could love people, tend to people, and care for people. Not only people, animals, plants, trees, nature itself," he said. 

He shared how his mother continued to care for others even during her time in hospice, where she would often look after the nurses caring for her. Since his mother’s passing, the actor has often spoken fondly of her and the time they spent together. The actor uses his performances as an artist as a way to channel those emotions and pay tribute to his mother.
