Bruce Campbell became a horror icon through his portrayal of Ash Williams, the chainsaw-wielding, quip-slinging survivor of the Evil Dead franchise. From the 1981 original to Army of Darkness and the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Campbell defined the character for over four decades. His slapstick slayer persona launched a lasting career and cemented his status as a genre legend.

Yet he has now revealed why he will not be returning for another movie.

Bruce Campbell has remained involved behind the scenes as an executive producer on recent installments including Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn. His involvement allowed him to remain connected to the world he helped define without stepping back into the role that made him famous. However, now, in a post on X, Campbell explained his decision to step away from leading the Evil Dead franchise.

“It is hard to communicate everything with everyone,” he wrote. “Mostly, the reasons were ability and interest, in equal measure. I did not want Ash to be compromised by declining skills and as a borderline Geezer, my interests have diverged.” Campbell also made it clear that leaving Ash behind does not mean abandoning the franchise.

“I will always love Evil Dead to death, literally,” he wrote, closing the post. 

Campbell, now 68, has also spoken publicly about his cancer diagnosis, which he revealed in March. He described the condition as incurable but treatable and said he expected to be around for some time. His latest comments place his decision to retire Ash within a broader shift in his professional life.

The franchise is moving ahead with Evil Dead Wrath, which is scheduled for theatrical release on April 7, 2028. Francis Galluppi is directing and writing the film, while Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing. Campbell is attached as an executive producer alongside Lee Cronin and others. Production has already wrapped, with the project now moving through post-production.

Plot details remain tightly guarded, although the film has assembled a new cast led by Charlotte Hope, Jessica McNamee and Zach Gilford. The movie represents another step in the franchise’s evolution as filmmakers continue expanding the mythology beyond Ash Williams. Bruce Campbell’s continued presence behind the camera gives Evil Dead Wrath a direct connection to the legacy he helped establish. His absence as Ash, however, signals a definitive change for longtime fans who have followed the character since 1981.
