Quentin Tarantino has named David Fincher as his favorite director, and he did not stop at a polite nod. The filmmaker took to a podcast and placed himself right beside the winner. Fans know Tarantino for guarding his work like a dragon guards gold. Letting another director near it is rare, which makes this pick worth a closer look. His latest comments also shed light on why he trusted another filmmaker to continue the story of one of his most beloved characters.

While Tarantino usually treats his scripts like a vault with a single key, he has now handed a copy to Fincher and explained, in generous terms, exactly why.

Quentin Tarantino explains why David Fincher is his favorite director

Quentin Tarantino crowned David Fincher his favorite director. The remark came on the podcast The Church of Tarantino, which also covered his best film. The praise comes as Fincher takes charge of The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a film written by Tarantino.

“I like the idea that any great director, a great director, would adapt my work,” Tarantino said.

He then added, “Fincher is my favorite director,” leaving no doubt.

Tarantino also made a bold comparison, placing himself on the same level as his favorite director and considering them both among the best in the industry.

The film is The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that Netflix acquired. Tarantino decided to stay out of the director’s chair this time. On The Church of Tarantino, he said Fincher’s wish to adapt his work shows a seriousness worth taking into account. Brad Pitt, who won the Supporting Actor Oscar for the original film, brought the pair together, according to Tarantino.

While Fincher gets comfortable in the The Adventures of Cliff Booth chair, Tarantino is staring at a finished script and deciding to go outside.

Quentin Tarantino wants to live a little before his tenth film

Quentin Tarantino told The Graham Norton Show that the script for his tenth and final film is finished, and he really likes it. The plan is to finish his play first, then spend time with his family. After that, he wants to live a bit and find out what that version of himself wants to do. Nothing about the film is on a deadline, and Tarantino seems happy with that.

The play is The Popinjay Cavalier, a swashbuckling comedy that Tarantino is writing and directing with Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead. Previews start February 23, 2027, at London’s Phoenix Theatre, with the opening on March 18 and a closing in June. That leaves a long runway before the tenth film, which suits a man who abandoned his earlier farewell attempt, The Movie Critic, in 2024. Meanwhile, David Fincher can keep the The Adventures of Cliff Booth chair warm, since Tarantino already ranks him as his equal.
