James Gunn has a rather Superman-like way of saying “My apologies,” and this time it involves David Corenswet’s hair. As Man of Tomorrow moves deeper into VFX, Gunn has responded to fans questioning the accuracy of Superman’s look with a playful promise to fix it. And Gunn, characteristically, answered the internet with an apology that somehow made the whole thing even funnier.

Sometimes, Superman discourse gets wonderfully specific. The color of the suit, the curl of the hair, the shape of the shield, even the exact shade of blue can become the subject of forensic fandom analysis. Gunn now appears to be leaning into that tradition.

The latest exchange began when a fan questioned whether James Gunn’s Superman was truly accurate, specifically pointing to David Corenswet’s hair. Rather than launching into a defense of his interpretation of Kal-El, Gunn responded with the sort of deadpan social media humor that has become part of his public persona.

On Threads, Gunn wrote: “Bringing MoT to VFX now to change David's hair throughout because of accuracy. And look for the Blue Cut of the first movie soon. My apologies.” 

Still, the timing of Gunn's joke makes it particularly fitting. Man of Tomorrow has officially wrapped principal photography, meaning Gunn and his team have moved into the visual-effects phase. Variety confirmed that production wrapped on August 27, with Corenswet returning alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult.

And that is where this tiny hair joke suddenly becomes part of a much bigger Superman story.

The sequel is already considerably more ambitious than a simple second outing for the Last Son of Krypton. James Gunn has described Man of Tomorrow as a story in which Superman and Lex Luthor have to work together against a far greater threat, with Lars Eidinger playing the super-intelligent Brainiac. 

That setup gives Gunn plenty of room to play with the stranger corners of Superman lore while keeping the emotional conflict between Clark and Lex alive. The returning cast includes Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. The film is scheduled for July 9, 2027.

Meanwhile, the original Superman remains the foundation of this new DC era. The 2025 film earned an 83% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting that Gunn's colorful, earnest take on the character connected with viewers despite the inevitable debates over comic-book fidelity. 

For now, the blue hair remains a joke, not a Kryptonian makeover. But Gunn clearly knows exactly how seriously Superman fans take the smallest details, and he is having some fun with it.
