The MTV Video Music Awards have remained one of pop culture’s biggest nights, turning music videos into events and giving artists a stage where live performances, fashion and unexpected moments collide. The 2000s produced several unforgettable examples, from the 2007 confrontation between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee to Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s 2009 acceptance speech.

Those moments became part of VMA history and showed why the ceremony continues to generate conversation long after the trophies are handed out. The 2026 edition is bringing another packed lineup, with major performances, special tributes and a highly anticipated Taylor Swift premiere.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Sunday, September 27, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET, or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT. CBS will carry the live broadcast, while MTV will simulcast the ceremony for cable viewers in the United States.

The show will also stream live on Paramount+ Premium through the local CBS affiliate feed. Paramount+ Essential subscribers will have on-demand access on September 28. Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony as the VMAs return to Los Angeles for the first time since 2017. The event will also become available internationally on Paramount+ and MTV the following day.

Madonna leads the nominations with 11, followed by Taylor Swift with nine, setting up one of the night’s biggest award-show storylines. Fan voting in the public categories remains open through Friday, September 25. Viewers can check their local CBS listings ahead of Sunday’s live broadcast.

With the date, time and streaming options settled, attention now turns to the performances, premieres and tributes planned for the night.

Taylor Swift will make a major appearance through the world premiere of the music video for her new single “Patient Zero,” directed by Swift and starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. She will also receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors for her work behind the camera.

Madonna will open the ceremony with her first VMA performance in 23 years. The night will also feature performances from LISA, RAYE, Shaboozey, Gunna, GENER8ION, Yung Lean and Sienna Spiro. GENER8ION and Yung Lean will deliver the world premiere of 'STORM II.”

The ceremony will also honor major musical legacies. RAYE, SOMBR and Teddy Swims will come together for a George Michael tribute, while Kacey Musgraves will perform in a special Dolly Parton tribute. Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award. The Best Dance category returns after a seven-year absence, adding another competitive field to the ceremony.
