It is relatively easy to make a biographical feature on a known personality and have it connect with the audience, as they are already somewhat familiar with the life and the journey of the person. However, the task becomes especially Herculean when exploring the story of a largely unknown figure who made the impossible possible from the shadows. Tenzing dares to take on this challenge and has shone the spotlight on a Sherpa who helped make an improbable mountaineering dream into an enduring reality.
In doing so, the film has impressed audiences with the inspiring story it presents with such emotional vulnerability, and it has translated into an exceptional Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%.

Early critical reception for the Apple TV+ mountaineering feature, Tenzing, has shattered personal bests for its high-profile headliners. Propelled by 61 reviews, the biographical drama sits at a staggering 98 per cent critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a stellar 92 per cent viewer rating from over 250 audience submissions. For Tom Hiddleston, the milestone marks a career-high watermark on the review aggregator, eclipsing previous critical darlings like Archipelago (96 per cent).
The fan-favorite blockbusters such as Midnight in Paris and Thor: Ragnarok (both at 93 per cent) have been topped as well. On the viewer side, the 92 per cent audience score officially outpaces the previous high-water mark claimed by Avengers: Infinity War.

Centering on the historic ascent, the feature stars newcomer Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay. He shares the screen with Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary and Willem Dafoe as expedition chief Colonel John Hunt. Caitríona Balfe as Jill Henderson and Thinley Lhamo as Tenzing’s wife, Dawa, are also amongst the lineup.
Despite being surrounded by titans of the trade like Dafoe and Hiddleston, who did everything to make this film happen, it is Phuntsok who steals the show.
Critics shower Genden Phuntsok with high praise
The lion's share of critical acclaim for Tenzing belongs to Phuntsok's breakout performance. Reviewers have lauded his subtle, emotionally resonant portrayal. Critics from the legendary Roger Ebert platform have singled out how the newcomer's expressive gaze captures both the quiet fulfillment and the lingering melancholy of conquering an impossible dream.
