Fans of the franchise have been very interested in the estimated release date of Mortal Kombat III ever since Mortal Kombat II was released. Mortal Kombat II, the second movie in the reboot, debuted in theaters a couple of months ago and did well at the box office during its theatrical run. It seems that moviegoers took a liking to it, and now they are left wanting more. Many people are now asking if a third installment is being developed and, if so, when it would be made available.

There has been a recent update on the possible release of the much-anticipated threequel.

The director of the Mortal Kombat movies, Simon McQuoid, provided an official status update on Mortal Kombat III in an interview with JoBlo on July 13 for the home media release of the sequel. The film's lifespan must be completed before he, the cast, or the studio can definitively announce whether the next movie will proceed. 

The director/producer said, adding that fans would have to wait and see on the franchise's threequel. McQuoid returned for the recently released Mortal Kombat II after making his feature debut in the 2021 reboot of the film series based on the legendary fighting game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. 

Karl Urban's Johnny Cage made his eagerly awaited debut in the sequel, joining the group of Earthrealm fighters to battle Shao Kahn and his Outworld soldiers. Notably, Mortal Kombat III was revealed to be being developed by New Line Cinema even prior to the Mortal Kombat II's premiere, which leaves the door wide open for a follow-up.

The franchise has thus far greatly benefited from the expertise and vision of Simon McQuaid. 

With his two directorial stints in the series thus far, Simon McQuoid has shown himself to be the greatest fit for the Mortal Kombat franchise. Despite receiving a "Rotten" rating of 55% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the first movie went on to become the best-reviewed live-action adaptation of the game. It also set the record for HBO Max's most successful film launch when it debuted simultaneously in theaters and streaming due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both at the movie office and among critics, Mortal Kombat II demonstrated even more development than its predecessor. With its 64% rating, the 2026 sequel once again held the record for the best-reviewed live-action film on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the first to receive a Fresh grade. With a global box office total of over $129 million, it also narrowly defeated Paul W.S. Anderson's original Mortal Kombat movie to become the highest-grossing version to date. Now, great things are expected of Mortal Kombat III as well.
