‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Takes a “Forget About It” Approach to the First Movie’s Weirdest Lore

After years of criticism surrounding the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, the sequel appears ready to course-correct in a major way. Early reactions and comments from writer Jeremy Slater suggest that Mortal Kombat 2 is leaning harder into the franchise’s chaotic fun while quietly pushing aside some of the first movie’s most divisive mythology choices.

That shift may end up becoming one of the sequel’s biggest strengths. Instead of over-explaining powers and lore mechanics, the new film reportedly focuses more on brutal tournament spectacle, humor, recognizable characters, and fan-favorite game elements. And according to Slater, that creative pivot was intentional from the very beginning.

One of the biggest complaints surrounding the 2021 Mortal Kombat film involved its “arcana” concept, which explained how fighters unlocked supernatural abilities through magical symbols and inner power awakenings. While the idea attempted to ground the franchise’s absurd abilities in a more cinematic framework, many longtime fans felt it unnecessarily complicated the mythology. That criticism clearly shaped the direction of the sequel. During an interview with io9, Jeremy Slater admitted the creative team recognized they had two choices moving forward: double down on the controversial lore additions or quietly move away from them altogether.

“Sorry, this is just what it is.” Or we try to give them what they wanted the first time around. So we’re very careful in the movie to never contradict the idea of arcana. But that word is also never mentioned in the movie very deliberately because we’re just sort of like, “Forget about it.” You’re here to have fun,” Slater said during io9’s interview.

That philosophy appears to define the entire sequel. Rather than focusing heavily on explanations, Mortal Kombat 2 embraces the franchise’s naturally ridiculous energy with more humor, bigger action sequences, recognizable arenas, fatalities, and game mythology. Slater even described the series as “gloriously, wonderfully silly,” suggesting the sequel no longer feels the need to apologize for ninjas, sorcerers, cyborgs, and movie stars battling for Earthrealm’s survival.

Yet even as the sequel simplifies parts of its mythology, it may also be planting the seeds for a much larger supernatural future.

Quan Chi’s resurrection storyline could reshape the franchise’s future

While the sequel may be simplifying certain lore elements, it is simultaneously expanding the larger supernatural mythology in a much bigger way through the arrival of Quan Chi. Earthrealm survives the tournament after Kitana defeats Shao Kahn in one of the movie’s major finishing moments, while Johnny Cage regains his confidence during a Netherrealm mission involving Shinnok’s amulet at the end of Mortal Kombat 2.

However, the film’s biggest setup reportedly comes through Quan Chi surviving the events of the movie and becoming tied to the resurrection of several fallen fighters. That development could dramatically alter the franchise moving forward because death has always been flexible within Mortal Kombat mythology. Spirits, revenants, alternate forms, and Netherrealm resurrection have long been central to the games, and the sequel finally appears ready to embrace that aspect fully.

The implications are enormous for a potential third installment. Characters like Kung Lao, Jax, Cole Young, and even alternate versions of Sub-Zero could realistically return through supernatural means. Quan Chi’s inclusion also opens the door for a larger storyline centered around Shinnok, one of the most dangerous villains in franchise history and a character capable of pushing the cinematic universe far beyond a single tournament structure.

If the sequel successfully balances fan service, humor, brutal action, and larger supernatural storytelling, Mortal Kombat 2 could become the movie many fans hoped the 2021 reboot would be. By stripping away some of the overcomplicated lore while embracing the franchise’s chaotic identity, the sequel seems determined to deliver a version of Mortal Kombat that finally feels comfortable being unapologetically itself.
