Mortal Kombat II has finally arrived in theaters with more brutal action, gory thrills, and the much-awaited Mortal Kombat tournament. After several gruesome fights, the movie ended with Kitana defeating Shao Kahn and becoming the queen of Edenia while Team Raiden captured Quan Chi to resurrect their allies. However, understandably, there are several questions about the ending of the movie and who survived the deadly battles, and who met a gruesome fate.

After all, the long-awaited Mortal Kombat tournament was never going to end without savage fights, shocking deaths, and a blood-soaked battle.

Who survived the Mortal Kombat tournament?

Among the many battles featured in Mortal Kombat 2, the Mortal Kombat tournament brought together about eight rounds, with Shao Kahn winning three, while Kitana secured two victories. Sonya Blade, Jax, and Liu Kang also won a round each. While some fighters survived their matches, such as Kitana sparing Johnny Cage after defeating him, and Jax allowing Jade to live in exchange for Kitana doing the same for Cage.

However, many others were not as fortunate. The film’s final and most crucial moment begins when Shao Kahn takes on Sonya Blade and Liu Kang. Having achieved immortality, Kahn initially appears unstoppable and on the verge of victory. He had almost defeated Blade and Kang.

However, Sonya manages to free Kitana, who had been tied to a statue after betraying Kahn. The assassin had already switched sides and was ready to take revenge against Kahn, who was responsible for her father’s death. This set up the film’s final battle, as the once-loyal assassin finally came face-to-face with Shao Kahn.

At the same time, Johnny Cage and Kano, trapped in the Netherrealm, attempted to destroy the amulet. Using his shadow kick, Cage finally succeeds in shattering the amulet, leaving Shao Kahn vulnerable. With Kahn now mortal, Kitana becomes an even more formidable opponent.

And turning Kahn’s cruel words about her father into motivation, she ultimately uses her sharp fans to defeat him, brutally slicing off his head. Meanwhile, with Quan Chi, who is capable of resurrecting the dead, Raiden’s team may attempt to bring back their fallen champions in the future. That brings an end to Mortal Kombat 2.

But as mentioned earlier, however, the battle did not end without several shocking and gruesome deaths.

Deaths in Mortal Kombat II

King Jerrod (killed by Shao Kahn)

Sindel (killed by Sonya Blade): She was later revived by Shao Kahn.

Revenant Kung Lao (killed by Liu Kang)

Cole Young (killed by Shao Kahn): He is brutally killed by Kahn.

Jax (killed by Shao Kahn)

Liu Kang (willingly spirits himself away)

Saibot (bisected by Scorpion)

Shao Kahn (killed by Kitana):

While some characters could potentially be brought back to life, the fate of others remains a major question. Bi-Han is struck down once again by Johnny Cage, Kano, Jade, and Scorpion, and has little hope for a return. Cole Young’s death was undoubtedly one of the film’s biggest shocks.

He was killed during the third round of the Mortal Kombat tournament. And considering his death, his return also seems questionable. However, Liu Kang is one of the fighters who could possibly return.

The fate of these characters, along with the possibility of their return, could become a major storyline in the next movie,  if a sequel happens.

Is a Mortal Kombat 3 possible?

Mortal Kombat II does not have a post-credit scene that hints at a sequel. However, the ending, which shows the team hoping to resurrect their fallen allies, strongly suggests that some characters could return. And that could be explored in another movie.

Moreover, Johnny Cage, who is portrayed as an action hero in the film, also hints at a sequel with his particular comment of 'Hollywood can wait." Earlier, Screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who worked on Mortal Kombat II, was also reportedly asked to return for a potential Mortal Kombat 3. He previously told io9 that he had already been working on a script for the third film and noted that the reactions to the second movie helped him better understand the tone for the next chapter.

“For a very long time, I’ve been writing and developing Mortal Kombat III sort of in a vacuum. And now that fans are seeing it and responding to it, we can see tonally what’s working. We can see, in terms of the characters, who are they responding to, [and] who are they going to want to see more of in a part three,” he said.

While there is clearly an idea in place for Mortal Kombat 3, the film has not yet been officially greenlit. Moreover, there has been no official update from Warner Bros. For now, the future of the franchise depends on the success of the upcoming film and whether it performs strongly enough to move the next installment forward.

The cast, including Karl Urban, also spoke highly of the film. While the movie debuted with $40 million across North American theaters, its 70 % Rotten Tomatoes rating is a good indicator of more success. Until then, fans will have to wait for an official update.
