Before Morgan Freeman became the voice and face of some of Hollywood's most memorable films, he was fixing radar for the U.S. Air Force. Before the Oscar and iconic roles, Freeman had a very different life, one that began with Air Force service. 

Morgan Freeman’s road to Hollywood had a surprising detour when he swapped a drama scholarship for a stint in the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from high school in 1955, Freeman joined the U.S. Air Force and received training as an automatic tracking radar repairman, working on systems that tracked aircraft and missiles. He served four years and was honorably discharged as an Airman First Class in 1959. 

Freeman, whose net worth is currently around $250 million, entered the Air Force with aspirations of being a fighter pilot, but his time in the cockpit during training changed his mind fast. He found that military life and flight operations were not the passion he had imagined and left the service to pursue his long-standing interest in theater and film. Hence, he later headed to Los Angeles and embarked on the path to becoming an Oscar-winning Hollywood legend.  

Freeman’s military background later had an interesting echo in his filmography, with the actor undertaking several roles related to the armed forces and national security. In Glory, he played Army Sergeant Major John Rawlins, whereas in Outbreak, he played Army Brigadier General William Billy Ford. Among several other military-related projects, he also played CIA director William Cabot in The Sum of All Fears and a former military attorney in High Crimes.
