Charlie Hunnam recently opened up about the deeply personal influence of his father that helped shape both his career choices and his approach to acting. Hunnam has built a career playing some of television and film's toughest characters, from outlaws and gang leaders to complex antiheroes. His performances have often carried a sense of grit and intensity that has become one of his defining trademarks.
Yet, behind those memorable roles lies a far more personal story. During a recent conversation at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Hunnam reflected on the motivations that first drew him toward acting, revealing that a deeply influential figure from his childhood shaped the path.

Speaking with Kara Warner for Conversations at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Charlie Hunnam opened up about the impact his father had on both his life and career. While discussing his journey as an actor, the Monster: The Ed Gein Story star explained that many of the roles he gravitated toward were connected to his desire to emulate the man he admired growing up.
“I had a beautiful not even really that complicated relationship with my dad but my dad was a huge impact on my life and he was like a really fierce tough guy and I always felt like I failed to live up to the sort of level that I held my dad at and so I think spent a lot of time trying to prove to myself that I can be like him as an actor why is why I ended up playing like a lot of gangsters and really tough roles,” Hunnam said.
The actor's reflection offers a new perspective on the rugged characters that have defined much of his career. What may have appeared to audiences as a preference for intense roles was, in many ways, part of a personal journey that helped him better understand himself while navigating the expectations he placed on his own life.
His willingness to discuss those formative influences comes as his involvement with the Monster franchise continues to expand.
What's next for Charlie Hunnam in the Monster universe?
Following the success of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Hunnam is set to return to the anthology franchise in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. Although Netflix has yet to reveal extensive plot details, he will reprise his role as Andrew Borden, linking the new installment to one of America's most notorious cases.
The return marks another major collaboration between Hunnam and producer Ryan Murphy, whose Monster anthology has become one of Netflix's most talked-about franchises. With audiences responding strongly to Hunnam's performance in the previous season, expectations are already building for his next chapter in the expanding series.
