Monica Barbaro has built a career many actors dream about, moving from ballet training to blockbuster jets and now to an Oscar-nominated folk anthem. Every milestone she has hit looks glossier than the last from the outside looking in. Yet actors rarely measure their own journeys by the same yardstick audiences use. On a recent podcast appearance, Barbaro peeled back that difference and revealed which chapter actually shaped her the most.

As the conversation moved deeper into her rise, one particular project surfaced as the moment everything before it had been building toward.

When Josh Horowitz asked Monica Barbaro whether landing UnREAL felt as significant as Top Gun: Maverick or her Oscar nomination for A Complete Unknown, the answer arrived without hesitation. Years of hoarded paychecks and quiet fear of never booking work again sat behind that response.

"Yeah. Maybe one of the most in my body," she said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Barbaro then added, "because it felt like a confirmation that I could be a working actor."

Before UnREAL, Barbaro spent years piecing together a career through short films, commercial gigs, and the occasional agent introduction on set. A SAG card ironically made booking commercial work harder, tightening the funnel just as she leaned on dog walking and bartending to get by. She kept training the entire time, unsure whether acting would ever fully sustain her, a stretch of her story she later broke down on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Even after landing the show, she saved every paycheck, still bracing for a stretch where the work might disappear again.

While Barbaro once feared steady work might never arrive, her newest role places her among Hollywood's most powerful names.

Monica Barbaro joins the Ocean's Eleven prequel cast

Monica Barbaro is set to join Bradley Cooper, Margot Robbie, and Wagner Moura in the upcoming Ocean's Eleven prequel, currently targeted for a June 25, 2027 release through Warner Bros. Cooper is directing, producing, and writing the screenplay, building on characters created by George Clayton Johnson and Jack Golden Russell. Robbie is producing through her banner, LuckyChap Entertainment, adding another layer of star power behind the camera. The film reportedly centers on Danny Ocean's parents rather than the casino heists that defined the original trilogy.

Robbie has teased that the story unfolds around the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, where Danny Ocean's parents are portrayed pulling off a heist that shaped his skills long before Las Vegas ever entered the picture. The setting gives the prequel its own identity while keeping the polished, stylish tone the franchise built its name on. For Barbaro, the project marks another major leap forward in a career that keeps climbing. Yet by her own account, no red carpet moment has matched the confirmation UnREAL once gave her that this job was truly hers to keep.
