The Harrigans have spent four episodes turning their criminal empire into a spectacular family-sized disaster. Frankie Cooper's peace negotiations ended with an exploding helmet, Dog's death, and enough bad blood to fill the Thames. Conrad has declared war, Kevin is struggling to contain his father's increasingly reckless decisions, and Maeve continues moving people around like disposable chess pieces.

Meanwhile, Harry Da Souza has discovered Jan's involvement with Donny, a supposed charmer secretly working for Kat McAllister. With loyalties crumbling and enemies circling, the Harrigans desperately need to close ranks.

Unfortunately, Episode 5, titled 'Birdland', arrives with a particularly nasty surprise waiting outside their gates.

Conrad's crumbling mind and Maeve's poisonous little secret

Conrad Harrigan has apparently decided that subtlety belongs in a museum, preferably one he can burn down. Following his declaration of war against Frankie Cooper, the patriarch transforms the Cotswolds estate into a fortress. His captive, JoJo, continues receiving the Harrigan hospitality package, which currently consists of torture and exceptionally poor room service.

Harry eventually kills JoJo, telling Conrad that the prisoner succumbed to his injuries. The fixer has enough problems without watching another interrogation spiral into a blood-soaked circus. His immediate priority is assembling the family. Harry urges Conrad and Kevin to resolve their differences because Frankie's forces are preparing for war.

Unfortunately, Conrad's mental condition introduces another terrifying complication. During a conversation with Harry and Kevin, Conrad suddenly asks about Brendan, his eldest son, who was murdered with a chainsaw during Season 1. He quickly claims he meant Eddie, but the damage is done.

The Harrigan king is forgetting his own dead, which hardly inspires confidence in his battlefield leadership. Meanwhile, Maeve has been experimenting with an especially sinister domestic accessory: antifreeze. Conrad discovers the bottle beneath the kitchen sink and questions whether Maeve intends to poison Harry, Seraphina, or even him.

She responds with wounded affection, insisting she would never harm her beloved husband. Given Maeve's history, somebody should probably confiscate the teapot. Elsewhere, Jan discovers a message from Seraphina on Donny's phone after dismissing Harry's warning about her new lover. The romantic illusion begins crumbling, exposing another carefully constructed deception.

Yet Maeve has an entirely different nightmare brewing across the Irish Sea.

Eddie's Irish adventure becomes a bloody rescue mission

Eddie Harrigan arrives in Ireland with Gina, blissfully unaware that his grandmother has organized the criminal equivalent of a suicide quest. Their hotel welcomes them with champagne, cheese, chutneys, and a SIG Sauer pistol. Apparently, Irish hospitality now includes complimentary firearms.

Maeve eventually reveals his assignment. Eddie must eliminate an Irish gangster called Medusa and bring back his head to prove that he possesses the necessary ruthlessness to carry the Harrigan name. The mythical name sounds terrifying enough.

The actual Medusa, played by Colm Meaney, proves equally unpleasant, with a particular enthusiasm for burying enemies inside concrete structures. Maeve has another motive for sending Gina along. Witnessing Eddie commit murder could destroy their relationship, making the mission a carefully engineered romantic catastrophe.

Eddie tracks Medusa's gang to McMullan's in Kenmare before following them to a farmhouse. His preparation includes watching online firearm tutorials, which seems an ambitious educational strategy when professional killers are involved.

Once Gina realizes what Eddie intends to do, she begs him to abandon the assignment. He refuses, prompting her to leave.  Predictably, things deteriorate spectacularly. Medusa captures Eddie, ties him to a chair, and threatens him with a heated poker. The gangster explains his gruesome methods of disposing of enemies while Eddie faces the consequences of entering enemy territory with approximately zero tactical expertise.

Gina returns to help but attracts Medusa's men, placing both of them in danger. Fortunately, Harry arrives and eliminates Medusa and his associates with a series of precisely delivered headshots. Eddie and Gina survive, but their rescue carries a devastating consequence. Harry has abandoned the Harrigan stronghold during its most vulnerable hour.

And back home, Frankie Cooper is preparing a housewarming gift delivered through automatic gunfire.

Who survives Frankie's brutal attack on the Harrigan estate?

Frankie Cooper finally makes his move, and the Cotswolds transform into something resembling a war zone. The location of the Harrigan family gathering has traveled through a dangerous information network. Seraphina tells Donny, who passes the intelligence through Kat McAllister and Tattersall until Frankie learns where his enemies have assembled.

One account suggests Harry knowingly shared the gathering's location with Seraphina, although the circumstances surrounding that initial disclosure remain unclear. Either way, Frankie has obtained exactly what he needs. With Harry occupied in Ireland, armed attackers descend upon the Harrigan estate.

Vehicles screech across the grounds, smoke grenades burst through windows, and gunfire tears through the compound. Frankie's soldiers overwhelm the defenses and kill multiple guards. The family's supposedly secure sanctuary becomes a shooting gallery, complete with considerably expensive landscaping.

Yet the attack does not achieve its ultimate objective. Conrad, Maeve, Kevin, Bella, Seraphina, and Paul survive, escaping aboard a helicopter as the estate falls to Frankie's forces. Harry, Eddie, and Gina also survive their separate confrontation in Ireland.

Conrad appears to have anticipated the possibility of an assault, allowing the family to escape despite their compromised position. However, their survival comes at a tremendous cost. Frankie has effectively destroyed their stronghold, leaving the Harrigans scattered and increasingly exposed.

Harry's absence proves particularly damaging. Without their trusted fixer coordinating the defense, the family struggles to maintain control, even with Conrad's preparations. The finale now faces an explosive setup. Conrad's deteriorating memory threatens his authority, Maeve's antifreeze remains unaccounted for, and Frankie has pushed the Harrigans out of their fortress.

There is also the lingering mythological connection to Cú Chulainn and Ferdiad, whose tragic confrontation could offer clues about the family's coming reckoning. For now, the Harrigans have escaped death. Whether they can survive their own poisonous loyalties remains another question entirely.
