Dwayne Johnson and the Moana crew are pulling out all the stops for the live-action remake of the beloved Disney film. While the animated original was much appreciated and loved by fans, expectations for the live-action adaptation are just as high. And the cast, including Catherine Lagaʻaia, has continued to show that the team is committed to bringing an honest yet unique adaptation of the animated film.

However, if there were any doubts, Johnson, Lagaʻaia, and the Polynesian dancers' performance at the film premiere shows their commitment to honoring the movie’s legacy.

Live action film, Moana's cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga'aia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Auli'i Cravalho, attended the world premiere of the film at the Hollywood Bowl. During the event, Johnson, Laga'aia, and the rest of the cast took the stage for a special live performance, dressed in costumes made for the performance. It not only celebrated the film but also hyped up the crowd.

Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated film, was also in attendance at the event. In the live-action adaptation, Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui. Meanwhile, Catherine Lagaʻaia will take on the role of Moana in the film.

Interestingly, the Samoan-Australian actress was selected among thousands of candidates to secure the role in the film.

Catherine Lagaʻaia was selected from thousands of submissions to play Moana in Disney's live-action remake. This is also her feature film debut as she transitions from performing arts in high school to playing Moana. Director Thomas Kail said he knew within seconds of meeting the 19-year-old Samoan-Australian actress that she was the right choice for the role.

“She’s something special,” Kail said, as per PEOPLE.

“I would say to her, ‘If you can do this, at any point in your career you can do anything.’ Nothing will be as big of a leap as that," he further added. 

Now, having grown up watching Moana, Lagaʻaia described the original as a perfect movie and acknowledged that it could never be replicated. Instead, Lagaʻaia said she focused on creating a fresh interpretation of the beloved Disney character rather than trying to match the animated version. But whether Lagaʻaia and the Moana cast can make it happen will be seen when Moana arrives in theaters on July 10.
