Tracking services estimate the live-action film will debut between $60 million and $65 million domestically, with some rivals predicting an even softer $40 million opening. This is a troubling start for a project carrying a massive $250 million production budget before marketing. Compounding the trouble, early reviews have been harsh, leaving the film sitting at a dismal 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While overseas audiences could provide a lifeline with a projected $70 million international launch, domestic tracking places it among Disney's lower-performing live-action remakes like Snow White and Dumbo. The studio has recently found immense success with its animated stories, but this live-action venture proves that translating streaming popularity to theater seats is a completely different challenge.

A high-energy premiere for Moana amidst the pressure

At the world premiere at the Hollywood Bowl, the cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga'aia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Auli'i Cravalho, came together to celebrate. Johnson, Laga'aia and the ensemble took the stage for a special live performance dressed in custom costumes, hyping up the crowd and celebrating the film's rich roots.

Auli'i Cravalho, who originally voiced the titular heroine, cheered on the new generation from the audience. In this adaptation, Dwayne Johnson reprises his iconic role as the tattooed demigod Maui, while Catherine Lagaʻaia takes on the mantle of Moana. Interestingly, the Samoan-Australian actress was selected among thousands of candidates to secure the role, right as Johnson announced the biggest promotional tour of his career to support the film.
