‘Mission: Impossible’ in a Galaxy Far, Far Away? Ryan Gosling’s Hilarious Tom Cruise Tale

Published 03/20/2026, 10:26 AM EDT

Tom Cruise has a trend of surprise visits, whether in theaters, surprising the audience, or filming sets, encouraging the cast and crew. It was just last year that he paid a visit to the sets of NCIS: Origins, which led to a surge of energy and morale in the crew involved. And of course, a visit from the Mission: Impossible star can make someone’s day, and he does not hesitate to show his encouragement and support. Recently, Ryan Gosling shared a similar incident.

Ryan Gosling’s space film crew got an unexpected surprise when Tom Cruise dropped by in classic Maverick fashion.

Tom Cruise has a way of doing things that only he can pull off. For instance, if someone wants to visit a set, he might take a car or maybe some other mode of transportation that seems rational. But that is not the Cruise style; he pulled up on the sets of Star Wars: Starfighter in a helicopter, surprising the cast and crew. Ryan Gosling has shared the entire incident on the Happy Sad Confused podcast interview with Josh Horowitz.

“I wasn’t there,” Gosling said, expressing his disappointment. He further explained that he had taken a break that day since he was continuously shooting for the film for an extended period. Director Shawn Levy sent him pictures from the set featuring Tom Cruise and his co-star, Flynn Gray.

Gosling recounted what happened that day. The crew was busy filming, and suddenly they heard a helicopter, so naturally they had to stop due to the noise. To their surprise, Tom Cruise stepped out of the helicopter and immediately started helping with the filming, manning a camera when Levy jokingly suggested that he should help out.

“I don’t know why he waited until the one day I wasn’t there. I hope that was an accident,” said the La La Land actor.

Cruise and his helicopter arrival gave the crew a memory for the ages. However, fans may have to jog their own memory of The Rise of Skywalker to follow Ryan Gosling’s upcoming film.

Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter is an ambitious project for Disney and Lucasfilm, set five years after the events of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker.

What do we know about Star Wars: Starfighter so far?

Star Wars: Starfighter is the latest addition to the Star Wars universe. The film is written by Jonathan Tropper, with Shawn Levy as the director. The makers have managed to assemble a phenomenal ensemble with Ryan Gosling in the lead and Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams in important roles.

That combination is intriguing. In particular, Goth, who is confirmed to play one of the antagonists, brings with her the heaviness of the horror genre, which is something new for the world of Star Wars. This could work if Levy sets the right tone for her to work with the story. Star Wars: Starfighter has been scheduled by Disney for May 28, 2027, which is precisely one year after Pedro Pascal's The Mandalorian & Grogu.
