The future of the Exorcist franchise looked pretty bleak after the disaster of The Exorcist: Believer. The 2023 release got quite an underwhelming response from critics and audience alike, despite enjoying a decent box office run of $137 million worldwide against a $30 million budget. A sequel that was previously scheduled for 2025 was put on hold by Universal Pictures as a result. In 2024, they brought in The Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan to overhaul the entire franchise.

Now, after almost two years, reports say that his Exorcist reboot has gotten a confirmed title.

The title that was once only rumored has now been almost confirmed by an update on Mike Flanagan's own production company website, Red Room Pictures, per World of Reel. Flanagan's planned Exorcist reboot will be titled Exorcist: Martyrs. Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Diane Lane, Noah Jupe, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, and John Leguizamo are set to star in the reboot.

Flanagan came on board in 2024, and in 2025 Blumhouse scheduled Flanagan's Exorcist for release in March 2026. Later that year, the movie was abruptly dropped from the calendar. The current release date is March 12, 2027. Apparently, Flanagan dropped the opportunity to direct DC’s Clayface, a project that he himself pitched to the studios.

The movie appears to be unrelated to the earlier films; Flanagan deliberately tried to disassociate it from franchise mythology. For this subsequent installment in the franchise, Flanagan was granted complete creative freedom, as reported by World of Reel. After the disastrous film directed by David Gordon Green, Universal and Blumhouse are depending on him to stabilize the Exorcist brand and get it back into fighting shape.

Mike Flanagan's Exorcist reboot is the seventh in the six films that make up the Exorcist franchise. Even though the series has experienced its fair share of hits and flops, most people still consider the original 1973 classic to be the holy grail of horror. While The Exorcist III garnered a devoted cult following, the remaining sequels have received mostly unfavorable reviews.
