The Exorcist holds the crown of nightmares in the land of horror classics. With each reboot or sequel, its saga gets reincarnated into the pulse of a newer generation, creating history all over again. The master of horror, Mike Flanagan, is exploring a bold reimagination of the 1973 classic like never before. The upcoming movie is set to present the classic demon-possession horror in a new light.

Mike Flanagan’s eerie remake of The Exorcist, the original being referred to as one of the most influential horror films of all time, is still in its early stages of production. But what has been confirmed so far is that it would not be a continuation or a direct sequel of the 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer.

Frequently regarded as a new, radical, and very different story within the universe of the original films, Flanagan will offer a scary world full of supernatural occurrences and iconic stars who are hard to forget. The exact details about the plot have not been revealed yet, but the idea is that the story could potentially revolve around the same universe of demon-possessed beings straight from the vault of vintage Exorcist themes.

"The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan had stated previously, while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his involvement in the project, which was announced in May 2024, at its nascent stage with no star-cast associated with it yet.

Scarlett Johansson is set to embark on her first major horror epic feature with Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist. This will mark her next jump to a blockbuster franchise after Jurassic Park and the MCU movies; just a regular Tuesday for the second-highest-grossing actor in Hollywood ($15.4 billion). Johansson will star as the main character in the film, alongside the talented young actor of Hamnet, Jacobi Jupe. 

Jupe has recently won the Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor. Their collaboration not only boosts the film’s creativity but also the story's emotional aspects, thus intensifying the horror. Although Jupe's role is tightly tucked under the wraps, like the plot of the movie, he most likely could play host to some evil spirit. 

The Exorcist's star-studded radical redo is set to arrive on March 12, 2027, following previous speculation for a March 13, 2026, release. This new date allows Mike Flanagan to complete other projects, like his Carrie series, and to make sure that the horror epic meets the highest standards. 

Mike Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing the film under his Red Room Pictures banner, along with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment, with Universal Pictures handling distribution. Jason Blum and David Robinson also serve as producers. 

This version of the franchise is already one of the most anticipated among the rest, particularly for its cast featuring Scarlett Johansson and filmmaker Flanagan's brilliant use of atmospheric tension, as evident in his ouerve which comprises Absentia (2011), Oculus (2013), Ouija: Origin of Evil (all 2016), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), The Midnight Club (2022), and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) and more.
