According to reports, Paramount Pictures has set a release date for Michael Shannon and David Corenswet's upcoming film, an untitled NFL biopic on John Tuggle. The movie is set to release on December 25, 2026, and will challenge the most anticipated film of the year - Avengers: Doomsday. With the addition of this John Tuggle film to their 2026 schedule, Paramount's domestic total for the year now stands at 13 movies in ComScore.
The yet-to-be-named film will get behind Paramount's lineup of Potsy Ponciroli's western The Rescue for January 29, 2027, and the feature picture Get Lite, directed by Oscar contender Teyana Taylor, for April 9, 2027. On July 16, 2027, the studio will also release an untitled horror event film.
With the John Tuggle biopic, they are attempting to bring a very special story, one about grit, hope, heartbreak, and a never-say-die attitude.
The beautiful story behind the biopic
Born on January 13, 1961, John Davis Tuggle was a one-season NFL running back whose influence went well beyond his stats. The New York Giants selected Tuggle last in the 1983 NFL Draft, earning him the moniker Mr. Irrelevant, which is customarily applied to the last pick in the draft. However, Tuggle battled his way onto the Giants roster, excelled in special teams, and won the Special Teams Player of the Year award.
But the good times did not last long for the player. Tuggle received a cancer diagnosis following personal challenges, injuries, and unexplained pain. At the age of 25, Tuggle passed away on August 30, 1986. During their Super Bowl-winning season, the Giants paid for his health insurance and wore his number 38 as a tribute to him.
Such an inspirational story needs a powerful and adept cast and crew to bring the tiniest detail to life in its full glory.
Cast and crew of John Tuggle's story
It was announced way back in October 2024 that David Corenswet was being considered for the title role, with the confirmation coming later the same year. Apart from him, Michael Shannon will also star in an important role as coach Bill Parcells. After Superman, this will be Corenswet’s next major project.
The movie will also feature Isabel May (Scream 7, Run Hide Fight) in a supporting role.
The movie is set to be helmed by Jonathan Levine, who has some of the most amazing films on his resume. He directed the best motivational dramedy about cancer survivors called 50/50 (2011), which was both funny and touching at the same time. Then there is the critically acclaimed 2013 zombie rom-com Warm Bodies, a hilariously refreshing take on the zombie-horror genre.

His other successful works include The Night Before (2015) and Long Shot (2019).
Such an achingly beautiful story deserves to be shown on the big screen, and the cast and crew involved are more than capable of bringing forth John Tuggle’s incredible fighting spirit for everyone to see. Michael Shannon as coach Bill Parcells and David Corenswet as John Tuggle will surely captivate audiences with their performances. There are still 10 months to go before this biopic hits the theaters and locks horns with Marvel’s supposed ‘comeback’ film.
