Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale will play the roles of Chris Shiherlis and Detective Vincent Hanna, respectively. Stephen Graham is reportedly replacing Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, while Adam Driver is still said to be taking on the role of serial k***** Otis Wardell. However, there has been no official confirmation of his casting. Heat 2 will reportedly be a prequel and a sequel that expands the stories of Vincent Hanna and Chris Shiherlis, with events occurring before and after the original film.
The sequel picks up with Shiherlis after Heat and his attempt to escape Hanna. Meanwhile, the prequel takes place in 1988 and explores the beginnings of Neil McCauley's criminal career and that of his crew, as well as Hanna's rise as a Chicago detective. The two parallel stories not only build the world of the franchise but also add depth to the histories of its main characters.
With Heat 2 on the horizon, it is the perfect time to revisit the film that started it all.
Revisiting the story of Heat
Heat is about Neil McCauley, who is a master thief with a tight crew. They pull off a string of big-time heists around Los Angeles until LAPD detective Vincent Hanna starts to close in on them. As their professional rivalry escalates, both men find themselves challenged to balance the pressures of their dangerous careers with their personal lives. The film blends hard-hitting crime action with character-driven drama, exploring the fine line separating law enforcers and the criminals they hunt.
