Michael Keaton is set to star and direct his third directorial venture, Rode to Ruin, alongside Morgan Freeman. Keaton’s prolific acting career spans decades, with Batman remaining his most memorable role, yet his work behind the camera deserves attention. He previously directed Knox Goes Away and The Merry Gentleman, showcasing his versatility beyond acting.

Now, Keaton is stepping behind the camera again for a Western that reunites him with a legendary co-star.

According to a Deadline exclusive, Michael Keaton will portray retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman in Rode to Ruin, an original Western thriller written by R. Dean McCreary. Morgan Freeman stars as Joseph Mulberry, a wanted outlaw who becomes Tillman’s quarry after a 40-year search for his wife’s k*****.

The trail eventually leads Tillman to an aging outlaw suffering from memory loss, forcing both men to confront a buried truth that could destroy them. The project also marks the first screen reunion between Keaton and Freeman in nearly four decades. The pair previously appeared together in 1988’s Clean and Sober. Keaton explained that the screenplay immediately stood out to him.

“When I first read it, I thought, this is really good and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together.” he told Deadline. After speaking with Freeman, the two discovered they shared the same vision for the film. Keaton also stressed that Rode to Ruin goes beyond its Western setting.

“Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn’t simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn’t simply a Western,” he said. The story explores forgiveness, revenge, redemption and difficult choices made when time is running out.

Before their Western reunion arrives, Keaton is already showing audiences a much darker side in his latest Netflix role.

Michael Keaton recently starred in Netflixin The Whisper Man, portraying imprisoned serial k***** Frank Carter. The August 28, 2026 release casts him against his familiar charismatic image, presenting the actor as a narcissistic murderer whose quiet presence becomes increasingly disturbing.

Directed by James Ashcroft and based on Alex North's bestselling novel, the film follows widowed crime writer Tom Kennedy, whose young son is abducted, leading him to seek help from his estranged father Pete Willis, a retired detective who originally caught the Whisper Man 15 years earlier.

The investigation culminates in prison confrontations between Robert De Niro's detective and Keaton's k*****, representing the central tension throughout the narrative. Director James Ashcroft noted that Keaton's unexpected presence in the role creates compelling contrast, transforming his naturally passionate demeanor into something deeply unsettling.
