ESPN and Hulu are bringing Michael Jackson’s historic 1993 Super Bowl Halftime show to life in a new documentary. Before the NFL halftime show became a colossal pop-culture spectacle featuring flying acrobats, elaborate stage design, and blockbuster guest appearances, it was largely a traditional marching band affair. That all changed in an instant in 1993, when the King of Pop stepped onto the stage at Super Bowl XXVII and delivered a masterclass in global performance that forever redefined live television.

Now, more than three decades later, the seismic cultural impact of that unforgettable afternoon is getting the definitive screen treatment. ESPN and Hulu team up for a new documentary chronicling Michael Jackson's monumental halftime performance.

Hulu and ESPN set Michael Jackson 1993 doc

Hulu and ESPN have unveiled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, an upcoming documentary exploring the creation and lasting cultural impact of the pop icon's historic 1993 halftime show. Slated for a February 2027 release, the film features previously unseen footage capturing Jackson and his crew rehearsing for the landmark event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Directed and produced by Bao Nguyen, the project highlights how the performance permanently transformed the Super Bowl halftime slot from a routine intermission into a premier global entertainment event. Prior to Jackson’s appearance, the NFL struggled to hold audiences during the break.

In 1992, Fox pulled off a massive counterprogramming success by airing a live In Living Color special that lured roughly 22 million viewers away from Gloria Estefan's halftime set. Seeking a massive rebound, the NFL brought in Jackson - then arguably the planet's biggest star - to headline the 1993 broadcast. His famous entrance, which opened with two dramatic minutes of motionless silence, helped drive a historic milestone: for the first time ever, the second half of a Super Bowl attracted a larger audience than the first.

The documentary really goes into the iconic halftime show that changed everything and, most importantly, caused thousands of football fans gathered at the moment to hold their breath.

The doc set to feature everything from the legendary performance

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl delves into the meticulous choreography and production behind the set, featuring powerhouse hits like ‘Jam,’ ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Black or White,’ and ‘Heal the World,’ the finale of which brought more than 3,000 local children onto the stage. By redefining the scale of live televised concerts, Jackson's performance laid the groundwork for future blockbuster acts ranging from Prince and U2 to Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen.

The documentary is a joint production between Skydance Sports, Optimum Productions, and NFL Films. The production team features Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, Lauren Gaffney, John Branca, and Amit Dey, alongside executive producers Karen Langford, Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow, and Jessica Boddy. This project arrives hot on the heels of the success of Michael, which starred the pop icon's nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
