Michael J. Fox Is Alive: Actor Issues Assuring Statement After False Reports of Death

Published 04/09/2026, 10:32 AM EDT

Nothing unsettles the internet faster than an obituary arriving before its subject is even done with press appearances. CNN managed precisely that by briefly publishing a tribute package titled Remembering the life of actor Michael J. Fox, instantly igniting panic. The timing bordered on surreal: just one day earlier, Fox had appeared at PaleyFest LA on April 7, 2026, celebrating Shrinking’s third season, giving interviews, and warmly embracing co-star Harrison Ford on stage.

That is why fans found the reports jarringly abrupt, quickly suspecting misinformation, suspicions which were later confirmed by multiple official statements, one including Michael J. Fox's.

Michael J. Fox addressed the bizarre situation directly on Threads, responding to the false death report sparked by CNN with a mix of humor and disbelief. Rather than issuing a stiff denial, Fox leaned into the absurdity, assuring fans he was alive while poking fun at the surreal experience of watching his own premature obituary unfold on television.

“How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” Fox wrote, before launching into a sharply comic multiple-choice list. He joked about switching channels, testing reality with pain, calling his wife for reassurance, or simply accepting it as an annual nuisance. The message balanced wit with clarity, ending with a casual but definitive sign-off: he was, in fact, completely fine.

Meanwhile, CNN moved quickly to contain the fallout. A spokesperson acknowledged that the tribute package had been published in error and confirmed its removal across platforms. The CNN spokesperson also made a point to direct the apology to Michael J. Fox and his family. This would probably be the only case of a false death report by CNN, after its infamous 2003 incident.

Miachel J. Fox's stacked slate

Michael J. Fox’s upcoming slate is unusually full, beginning with Shrinking Season 3 on Apple TV+, where he takes on a multi-episode arc as Jerry, a sharp-tongued neurology patient opposite Harrison Ford. The role marks his first live-action television appearance in five years, with episodes rolling out weekly through early April 2026.

Beyond live action, Fox is also lending his voice to The Magic 7, an animated environmental project nearing completion for a 2026 release. He voices Marcel Maggot, including musical elements that highlight his performance range. In parallel, his upcoming memoir Future Boy, co-written with Nelle Fortenberry, is scheduled for a Fall 2026 release, revisiting his Back to the Future years with new personal insight.

His advocacy calendar is equally demanding through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, including multiple stops on the Parkinson’s IQ + Yo” tour across major cities in 2026, followed by a large-scale celebration event in 2027. Let us not forget his advocacy for Taylor Swift and Ryan Reynolds. All of this, is by any measure the schedule of someone actively working, traveling, and engaging, not remotely resembling a man nearing an exit.
