Michael Douglas has explained why the “nepo baby” label does not sit well with him, arguing that Hollywood is unfairly singled out for a practice common across professions. The conversation comes as Douglas reflects on a career lived under the shadow of his father, Kirk Douglas. Yet his point is less about denying family connections than questioning why entertainment is treated as uniquely guilty when parents help their children enter the family business.
The debate is familiar, but Douglas has family history to make it personal.
Michael Douglas pushes back on the “nepo baby” label
Michael Douglas gave more insight into the subject of the supposed Hollywood nepotism that has gone on for years now. During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, Douglas expressed his staunch disagreement with what the term insinuates.
“Well, first of all, you know, Hollywood royalty. I mean… this ‘nepo’ thing really p***** me off,” Douglas said.
He continued, “I don’t know a career where a father or mother don’t try to help their son or daughter get into their business and this and that, and why they picked on this because of the well-known aspect of it.”

Bateman agreed that nepotism is not exclusive to entertainment, while Douglas added, “But they make it like it’s, we’re the only ones, you know?," while on SmartLess.
To bring more to the conversation, Douglas’ memoir, One Helluva Ride, arrives October 6, examining the career and family history, that made his Hollywood path impossible to separate from his father’s, in addition to overdue confirmations of hidden relationships.
Their careers offer a useful lens into why the label remains complicated when the family connection is impossible to ignore.
From Kirk Douglas to Michael Douglas
During his time, Kirk Douglas built his reputation as one of Hollywood’s defining stars, appearing in Spartacus, Paths of Glory, Lust for Life and The Bad and the Beautiful. He earned three Oscar nominations and received an honorary Academy Award in 1996.
Michael Douglas, on the other hand, established a career of his own, first gaining recognition as a producer before becoming a leading man. He shared the Best Picture Oscar for producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and won Best Actor for Wall Street, where Gordon Gekko became a defining performance. His filmography also include classics like Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Douglas advised aspiring actors to recognize good material, arguing that strong roles can help carry performers. The tips could, in fact, be taken as a small peek into the possibility that Hollywood nepotism might be undermining other parts of the process. And while Douglas' argument does not erase privilege, it does ask whether a career should be reduced to the circumstances of its beginning.
