The biopic Michael continues to make headlines and break records as it surpasses $900 million at the box office. Lionsgate’s biggest release, starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle Michael Jackson, has been raking in millions since its theatrical debut. With its massive earnings, it has even outperformed films like Oppenheimer, and there is further potential as the movie is set to release in Japan in June 2026 and later for streaming release, too.
And with the film continuing its impressive run at the box office, Michael is just a few steps away from setting yet another historic record.

As per Deadline, the biopic on Michael Jackson has already earned $900 million and is now Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film. With that, the movie will need $11 million more to dethrone Bohemian Rhapsody and become the highest-grossing musical biopic ever. As per Deadline, Michael has already beaten Bohemian Rhapsody’s earnings in several countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and more.

Considering the film’s preview earnings and strong debut, there were predictions for the movie to achieve this milestone. There is also speculation that the movie may cross $1 billion worldwide soon, as it has yet to be released in certain regions. With Universal handling its international theatrical distribution rights, the film has already earned nearly $544.8 million internationally and about $355.2 million in the U.S.
And the success of the movie has already spawned a much-anticipated sequel.
Michael movie has a confirmed sequel
Even before its release, Michael was in talks to get another movie. However, the sequel was not officially confirmed until the biopic reached new heights at the box office. As Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson explained earlier, the sequel is expected to be even more exciting than the first film.
"There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie, that weren’t touched upon, so we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together,” he said, as per Variety.

Fogelson also noted that several events from Michael Jackson’s life were not covered in Michael. Apart from those events, there are numerous hit songs from Jackson’s catalog and several scenes cut from the first film that could be incorporated into the sequel. The biopic is yet to reach its full box-office potential, but the anticipation for the follow-up is already high.
