Amazon MGM Studios is developing a sequel to The Love Hypothesis, bringing Ali Hazelwood’s romance back into the spotlight with The Two-Body Problem. The announcement arrives just as Prime Video’s adaptation of Hazelwood’s bestselling novel has introduced Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen to an even bigger audience. Now, the story that began as one of BookTok’s favorite academic romances has another chapter waiting in the wings.

For Hazelwood readers, this is the rare sequel that arrives because the characters still have unfinished business, rather than because a franchise simply needs another installment.

Ali Hazelwood announced The Two-Body Problem on Tuesday, revealing that the sequel will be released next February. The new book returns to Olive and Adam, continuing their story after The Love Hypothesis and expanding the world that made the fictional Stanford scientists such a breakout romance pairing. Amazon MGM Studios is already developing a screen adaptation of the sequel, although the project remains in its early stages.

The announcement also has a particularly circular connection to the new movie. Hazelwood said the The Love Hypothesis adaptation and its cast made her fall for Adam and Olive all over again, inspiring her to revisit them. That makes The Two-Body Problem more than a conventional follow-up: the characters returned to their creator at almost the exact moment they were being rediscovered by a new screen audience.

The timing matters because The Love Hypothesis has already traveled an unusually long road from online fandom to publishing phenomenon and now Hollywood adaptation.

Ali Hazelwood originally wrote the story as Star Wars fan fiction before transforming it into the novel that became The Love Hypothesis. The book went on to become a major romance bestseller, helped by the very specific cocktail that made Olive and Adam irresistible to readers: academic rivalry, forced proximity, a towering grump with a soft center and enough STEM-world detail to give the fantasy a distinctive setting.

Amazon MGM has also been building a strong track record with romance adaptations. The Summer I Turned Pretty became one of Prime Video’s biggest global franchises, while Maxton Hall emerged as a breakout international hit, reaching No. 1 in more than 120 countries and territories after its debut. 

That makes The Love Hypothesis a particularly interesting test case. The movie currently carries a 75% critics score and 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Prime Video has positioned it alongside its growing collection of book-driven romance hits. With Hazelwood now returning to Olive and Adam, Amazon MGM has an opportunity to turn a bestselling standalone romance into something closer to a continuing screen universe.

For now, The Two-Body Problem is only in early development on screen, but the book sequel gives Amazon MGM a fresh story to build around.
