In response to rising criticism over plans to honor John Galliano, the Met Gala organizers are allegedly thinking of rescheduling the 2027 event. It seems like the Met has shifted from fashion as its main theme to controversy becoming its main draw. The 2026 event was riddled with dissension over Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos serving as the lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs, which sparked major protests and celebrity boycotts over economic inequality and Amazon's labor practices. Now, they have already taken a jump at next year’s controversy by announcing a tribute to John Galliano.
The flak they are receiving for the decision has gotten worse, forcing them to mull over a date change for next year’s event.
Met mulls rescheduling 2027 Gala amid John Galliano controversy
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's proposal to honor John Galliano, a successful British fashion designer who was found guilty of a hate crime by a French court in 2011 for his antisemitic outbursts, has drawn increasing criticism. Galliano, who turned Dior into a worldwide force prior to his scandal, will be the focus of a nine-month show organized by the Met's Costume Institute.
Under the direction of Anna Wintour, the global editorial director of Vogue and a trustee of the Met, the show is set to begin on May 3, 2027, with the Met Gala. The decision to honor Galliano is being criticized by an increasing number of individuals. Met trustees and board members have been rushing to contain the damage in the face of public criticism.

To begin with, they are debating whether to shift the next Met Gala from its customary date of the first Monday in May to the next week. The planned party date in 2027 will coincide with Yom HaShoah, worsening an already severe backlash.
The backlash is only getting worse, with several big influential Jewish leaders being involved in the pushback against the event that is famous for its red carpet looks.
Met gets threatened by Jewish patrons
Jewish leaders in New York and elsewhere have become increasingly opposed to the museum's proposal to honor John Galliano in recent days. Met executives have been contacted by donors who have threatened to withdraw their gifts to the museum if the show proceeds as scheduled. They have contacted Wintour, the director of the museum, Max Hollein, and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton.

In a letter to Hollein, Bolton, and Wintour on Thursday, August 27, Julie Menin, the speaker of the local Council and one of the most senior Jewish figures in local administration, referred to the museum's choice to showcase Galliano's work as "a serious mistake." The date change might alleviate this Met’s problem a little bit here, but it does not seem to be a permanent fix to the problem.
What do you think Met will decide in the matter? Do let us know.
