The Met Gala’s 2027 theme is extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, a celebration of the clothes and materials that rarely command a red carpet. The annual event has long turned the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition into a wider fashion conversation, with its themes inspiring designers, celebrities, and audiences well beyond the museum steps. After 2026’s Costume Art exhibition and Fashion Is Art dress code, the next edition is looking closer to home.

The latest theme trades the grand gestures of fashion history for the familiar pieces that quietly shape everyday wardrobes.

The Met Gala 2027 turns its attention to everyday fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue announced the theme, extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, on November 5. The spring 2027 exhibition will be organized by Costume Institute curator in charge Andrew Bolton, with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben assisting. Rather than centering a single designer or fashion house, the exhibition will examine the overlooked appeal of everyday staples, including jeans, T-shirts, raincoats, sweatshirts, and puffer jackets, inviting visitors to reconsider what ordinary clothing can communicate.

Its approach, announced by Vogue, moves in two directions: one explores how designers recast familiar garments as runway creations, while the other looks at the transformation of humble materials into wearable art. The theme makes a sharp pivot from the spectacle often associated with the Met steps, suggesting that the clothes most taken for granted can carry just as much creative possibility.

But this considerably different direction follows a turbulent few months for the Costume Institute, after its original plans for the spring exhibition became untenable.

The abandoned 2027 Met exhibition

The shift to extraORDINARY follows the cancellation of John Galliano: Horizons, a retrospective that had been planned as the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition and the basis for the gala. The Met and Galliano, however, announced in August that the show would not proceed after criticism mounted over the designer’s history of antisemitic and discriminatory remarks, including incidents that led to his 2011 conviction in France.

Galliano said he remained accountable for the harm caused and did not want the exhibition to distract from the Institute.

The proposed tribute had also drawn objections because the gala was scheduled for May 3, 2027, the beginning of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. Critics questioned the decision to honor Galliano despite his past conduct. Galliano ultimately acknowledged that an exhibition could be painful for some communities, recognizing that institutional recognition could not substitute for continued accountability, paving the way for the new, extraordinarily ordinary theme.
