Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ is returning to theaters for a week-long run from September 10 to 17 in a new 4K remaster with Dolby Atmos sound, Variety reports. The special re-release will also feature an exclusive first look at The Resurrection of Christ: Part One, the long-awaited first part of Gibson's sequel. Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment are bringing the film back to the big screen in anticipation of the sequel hitting theaters in May 2027, Variety reported.
Ticket holders will also receive an exclusive sneak peek of The Resurrection of Christ: Part One. Lionsgate touts the sequel as Gibson’s most ambitious filmmaking achievement and the largest faith film ever brought to the screen. The preview is designed to increase anticipation ahead of the sequel's release in cinemas in May 2027.
“’The Passion of the Christ’ remains one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created. For millions of people, it was far more than a film — it became a powerful shared cultural and faith experience,” says Kevin Grayson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s president of worldwide distribution, as per Variety, stating that the film transcended entertainment, becoming a powerful cultural experience.
Moreover, he added that the screening of the movie in the theaters in such a magnificent restoration would allow old fans to watch it in a new way while presenting a whole new generation with this movie. Meanwhile, The Resurrection of Christ is supposed to be a continuation of The Passion of the Christ. It was about the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus Christ.
The long-awaited sequel continues the biblical story where the original film ends.
The story of The Resurrection of the Christ explained
The Resurrection of Christ focuses on His resurrection and its deep aftermath, instead of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. The sequel, which is set to release in 2027, does not recount the previous movie but explores the spiritual and cosmic ramifications of Christ’s victory over death. The story follows the fulfillment of the biblical prophecy and investigates how the resurrection transforms His followers and the course of humanity.

Mel Gibson has said that the sequel is an ambitious retelling that goes beyond the resurrection itself, exploring both the earthly and supernatural worlds. The narrative will likely concern the events leading to Christ’s end, blending biblical stories with theological ideas. At its core, the movie is a story of hope, redemption, and the timeless meaning of one of Christianity’s most important events.
Meanwhile, The Passion of the Christ is coming back on screens, giving audiences the chance to relive Mel Gibson’s landmark biblical drama, but also offering a first look at its long-awaited continuation. With a renewed theatrical presentation, a first look at The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, and a sequel that promises to explore one of Christianity’s most important moments, the franchise is entering an ambitious new chapter. The special re-release is a celebration of the original film’s legacy and a bridge to Gibson’s next installment in his biblical saga.
