The Duchess of Sussex was seen with Malala Yousafzai in London, marking her first public appearance in the capital since returning to the UK with her family. The meeting at Claridge’s comes as she and Prince Harry settle into a new chapter on British soil after years in California. For someone who has largely kept away from central London, the setting and company made the appearance especially notable.

The sighting carries extra weight because this is not simply a familiar celebrity encounter. The two women already share a history rooted in girls’ education, making their reunion particularly intriguing against the backdrop of the Sussexes’ return to Britain.

According to the Daily Mail US, the Duchess of Sussex and Malala Yousafzai were photographed leaving Claridge’s in Mayfair after afternoon tea before sharing a warm hug outside the hotel. The report places the meeting firmly within the Duchess’ first return to London’s public social scene since moving back to the UK with Prince Harry and their children. Other reports have also identified the outing as her first known public appearance in the capital since the family’s relocation.

The fashion bill quickly became part of the story. The Duchess wore a camel Tove Studio coat, a cashmere sweater and Ralph Lauren trousers, while accessories included a Chanel handbag, Saint Laurent loafers and a Logan Hollowell diamond and emerald necklace. Her complete look was reported to be worth just over £28,000 ($37044.39), while she also carried a canvas tote featuring women wearing hijabs. The Daily Mail report also said the pair enjoyed classic afternoon tea, including cucumber sandwiches, scones, jam and clotted cream.

But the more interesting detail sits beneath the luxury hotel gloss. The reunion connects directly to a relationship that began publicly in 2020, when the Duchess, Prince Harry and Malala joined an online discussion for International Day of the Girl focused on the importance of girls’ education.

That history gives the Claridge’s meeting a different texture, particularly as Markle has recently been focused on her As Ever business.

Why London remains a complicated chapter for the Duchess

The return to central London also comes with considerable history. Months before the Sussexes relocated to the United States, the couple were met by some boos when they arrived at St Paul’s Cathedral for the Platinum Jubilee service in June 2022. Since then, the Duchess has passed through Heathrow but has generally stayed away from the capital amid continuing concerns surrounding security.

Malala brings her own extraordinary London story. After surviving a political upheaval in Pakistan in 2012 for advocating girls’ education, she went on to become the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient at 17 and later studied at Oxford University.

For now, one afternoon at Claridge’s does not establish a new philanthropic campaign. It does, however, place Meghan Markle back in a city that has remained central to her public story. Whether this reunion becomes a sign of renewed work around girls’ education remains to be seen.
