Meet Rue Rose: All About Teyana Taylor’s Little Star Lighting Up Awards Season

Published 03/02/2026, 5:24 PM EST

There are women who attend awards season, and then there is Teyana Taylor, who seems to author it. From the 2026 Grammy, where she shimmered in custom Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann, a sand-colored, light-catching marvel, to the deep plum Burberry silk duchesse at the BAFTAs, to that sculptural Schiaparelli Haute Couture moment at the Golden Globes, Taylor dominated the red carpets as well as the nominations. But for all the couture fireworks, what truly lingered from the 32nd Annual Actor Awards last Sunday was not the gown. It was her plus one.

That plus one was her daughter, Rue Rose. Suddenly, every search engine wanted to know the same thing: who is the little girl beside Teyana Taylor?

At the 32nd Annual Actor Awards on March 1, Taylor brought her daughter, Rue Rose Shumpert, 5, along for one of the biggest nights of her career. The actress, nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for The One Battle After Another, had the most elegant helper imaginable. In an adorable moment before the photographers, Rose carefully laid out her mother’s train, smoothing it with the seriousness of a seasoned stylist.

Rue Rose, born in 2020 to Teyana Taylor and former NBA star Iman Shumpert, has clearly inherited both stage presence and composure.

Meanwhile, Taylor, 35, did what she does best: elevate. For the Actor Awards, the Times Woman of the Year 2026 chose a surrealism-inspired gray and white form-fitting Thom Browne gown with a small train. It was a dynamic form of couture, and yet, the image people kept replaying was not just the dress, it was Rue Rose tending to it, and then later posing with her.

Awards season has unfolded like a coronation for Teyana Taylor, even without an Actor Award win, undeniably shifting the narrative.

How One Battle After Another changed Teyana Taylor’s career

Teyana Taylor’s performance in One Battle After Another detonated expectations. The politically charged action thriller not only earned her a Golden Globe win, but also her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film itself racked up 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and supporting nods for Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, placing Taylor firmly in elite company.

When her Oscar nomination was announced, she told PEOPLE,

“They said my name and we just all started screaming. I lost my voice for maybe like four or five days, honestly.” The film has swept through guild nominations, critics’ awards, and major ceremonies, cementing Taylor not just as a multi-hyphenate but as a dramatic force. And yet, the image that may define it all? A five-year-old carefully arranging a train before stepping back.
