Catherine ‘Katie’ Laga'aia is a 19-year-old Australian actress who made her monumental feature film debut in Disney's live-action Moana. Born in Sydney, Australia, she is of Samoan and English descent and grew up in a lively household alongside seven siblings. Her father, Jay Laga'aia, is a veteran actor known for playing Captain Typho in the Star Wars prequels.

The young talent attended Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, balancing her regular classes with early screen appearances in the television series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. Laga’aia said to USA Today that when the official casting announcement suddenly dropped, her classmates were completely blindsided because she had abruptly vanished from school to film in America.

Laga'aia’s friends sent direct messages insisting the official Disney casting photos were merely artificial intelligence creations. Her peers assumed her father was playing a prank since she possessed minimal prior professional acting experience outside of school choirs.

“'This is really lame, Katie. This isn't funny.' I was like, look at the Disney account!," Catherine Laga'aia shared while speaking to USA Today. Despite subsequent mixed critical reviews for the movie itself, her performance received widespread praise.

The intense corporate talent search required the young artist to overcome massive numbers of global competitors.

The epic audition journey of Catherine ‘Katie’ Laga'aia and winning the lottery

Catherine ‘Katie’ Laga’aia shared with USA Today that the path to securing the coveted role required her to triumph over 32,000 actresses who submitted digital audition tapes. Initially, she believed trying out was a bad idea, comparing the microscopic odds of winning the role to entering a massive financial lottery. Her mother remained absolutely adamant that she try, motivating her to overcome her anxieties and submit her initial tape alongside her own sisters.

“She's like, 'You'll never know unless you try.' So then I had to buck up and do it," Laga'aia shared. The process eventually stalled during the Hollywood labour strikes, causing the teenager to fear that the entire blockbuster project would be permanently cancelled. Disney executives were ultimately charmed by her raw potential, even though she openly considered herself the weakest singer among her highly musical siblings.

Original animated voice star Auli'i Cravalho immediately welcomed her to the project by sending a supportive email to initiate a lifelong sisterhood. Her father eventually felt immense relief and pride seeing his daughter successfully stand her ground. At the end, she developed a positive attitude.

"But with time and practice, and a lot of positive reinforcement and support, I was like, 'You know what? I'll just push it a little bit. While the vast ocean journey challenged her boundaries, the brilliant Catherine Laga'aia successfully proved that she possessed the exact spirit needed to bring the beloved island star to life for the recently released Moana.
