MCU Icon Tom Holland Calls Working With This Oscar-Winning Director One of His “Proudest Achievements”

Tom Holland treats roles like costume changes in a very expensive identity crisis, yet there is one performance he refuses to let slip into the underappreciated file. Long known as the man in the red-and-blue suit, he has done far more beyond the skyline, delivering a bruised, brooding turn in The Devil All the Time, carrying Uncharted with easy swagger, and giving The Impossible its emotional weight.

For an actor with that kind of range, calling one opportunity irresistible sounds less surprising once one considers the Oscar-winning director behind it.

During a conversation with GQ, Tom Holland said this year is especially packed, with two major films landing in the same summer month: The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.  Of course, how can one talk about The Odyssey without mentioning two-time Oscar winner Christopher Nolan, also the director that the MCU icon hails as one of his greatest achievements. Holland called the filmmaker’s movie extraordinary and unlike anything he had ever seen, an experience that left him genuinely stunned.

"So it’s one of my proudest achievements as an actor, and I’m so touched that Chris gave me the opportunity to be in the film," said Holland. He added that Nolan’s approach made him keep asking how the sequences were achieved, and he was particularly astonished by the director's ability to carefully plan in-camera effects instead of leaning on CGI.

He said certain sequences looked so impossible that he was convinced they must have been CGI. After the screening, he even checked with Nolan, only to learn that the effects were all built in camera. One imagines Holland feeling both impressed and mildly outsmarted, which is a perfectly reasonable reaction to a Christopher Nolan film. If someone who has done the impossible as Spider-Man was floored by Nolan's movie, it is not surprising that The Odyssey is outpacing every 2026 film in this category.

Tom Holland placing this Christopher Nolan project among his proudest achievements sets the bar dangerously high for him in The Odyssey.

Why Tom Holland in The Odyssey is a big deal

Cinema audiences have decided that Tom Holland has something to prove, which is what happens when one spends years saving New York in a well-tailored suit. Holland is undeniably one of his generation’s most visible stars, but visibility and reinvention are not always the same. This film positions Holland at a crucial point where he can demonstrate range beyond the familiar Marvel framework.

His character, Telemachus, himself carries significant emotional weight, existing in the shadow of a legendary father while navigating uncertainty and responsibility. Although a few characteristics of his The Odyssey character do sound more like a Greek version of Peter Parker, Telemachus will help form an image of a passionate young warrior surviving on his own intellect and wit.

He searches for answers about his father’s long absence, protects Penelope from relentless suitors, and steadily forges his own identity. The arc balances duty with self-discovery, shaping the film’s emotional core. And if Holland manages to do what audiences are expecting from him then not only will the film be viewed as one of his proudest achievements by him but also by his fans.
