Carey Mulligan addressed the questions about her being in Greta Gerwig's Narnia with a smile, but a deliberately diplomatic answer, all credits to her excitement. Speaking on TODAY while promoting Beef Season 2 alongside Oscar Isaac, the actress first declined any information on the adaptation's development, then addressed her own presence in it.

“Maybe I’m in it,” she revealed. She explained how it is her first time being part of a project this "secretive," but also labelled the experience as thrilling.

“It’s terrifying. I have never been in anything where it’s been this secretive, but quite thrilling, yeah,” she said on the show.

The off-the-cuff remark matched earlier reports that Mulligan has joined the project, widely believed to be playing Digory’s seriously ill mother in The Magician’s Nephew-based chapter of Gerwig’s two-part Narnia saga. Since late 2025, trade outlets have reported that Mulligan is in or near a deal to join a cast already anchored by Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and Emma Mackey, underscoring how Gerwig’s Narnia reboot is quickly assembling a prestige ensemble.

The film’s mix of secrecy and high-profile talent has fueled intense speculation, with fans scouring interviews for any hint of casting. Now, with Mulligan’s own comment, the line between rumor and confirmation has blurred, adding to the buzz as Netflix and AMC prepare to roll out what could be one of the most talked-about family-fantasy events of 2026.

Greta Gerwig breaks silence on her Narnia adaptation

At a recent “Next on Netflix” event in Hollywood, Greta Gerwig finally broke her nearly two-year public silence on her upcoming Narnia film. She spoke candidly about her lifelong connection to C.S. Lewis’s series, describing the books as the ones she loved and lived through as a child, and said it has been both a joy and an honor to reimagine Narnia’s mythic world onscreen, even as the project itself remains tightly under wraps.

Netflix has not yet confirmed which book Gerwig is adapting, though industry reporting strongly suggests her first film will center on The Magician’s Nephew, the prequel-style origin of Narnia, before moving toward the more familiar stories. Netflix film head Dan Lin has teased that Gerwig’s version will take a rock-and-roll approach to the classic tale, echoing producer Amy Pascal’s earlier comments that this will be a very new take on the Narnia universe rather than a straightforward period-fantasy replica.

With a November theatrical debut followed by a Netflix release the next month, the project is being positioned as a major fantasy event. That bold vision lines up neatly with the swelling cast buzz, such as Carey Mulligan’s rumored and now semi-confirmed role, suggesting that Gerwig’s Narnia will be less about nostalgia and more about a bold, star-driven reimagining of a childhood favorite.
