Maya Hawke has generally kept her four-year-old relationship away from the celebrity spectacle. Despite it all, her Valentine’s Day marriage ceremony to Christian Lee Hutson in New York attracted quite the crowd. Between a star-studded guest list and the inevitable curiosity surrounding two newlyweds, some public exposure was hardly surprising.

What Hawke had not anticipated, however, was that one discreet photographer would end up solving a rather particular wedding-day dilemma for her.

Maya Hawke explains why the wedding photographs were welcome

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Maya Hawke reflected on marrying Christian Lee Hutson on February 14, 2026, and her decision against arranging a public wedding feature. She explained that seeing the pictures published in PEOPLE actually spared her the need to arrange a separate feature about her custom Prada wedding dress, which she had considered as a gesture of appreciation for the fashion house.

" I worked with Prada, so it felt like a way to honor them without having to go out in public and say, 'Look at me,' " Hawke said. The unexpected publicity let her acknowledge that collaboration without turning her wedding into another promotional appearance.

The couple celebrated with family and friends, including her parents, Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, and several Stranger Things castmates, before photographs of the wedding party walking through New York surfaced online. According to Hawke, just one photographer captured the procession, without intruding on the celebration or disrupting the occasion.

“And they were, to their credit, extremely noninvasive,” Hawke told the magazine, adding that nobody noticed the photographer or felt uncomfortable.

Wedding photographs are only one reason Hawke has been making headlines; another comes with a far less romantic kind of public spectacle.

Maya Hawke builds Wiress beyond the familiar Hunger Games character

Hawke will portray Wiress, the District 3 victor, in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, revisiting a character previously played by Amanda Plummer in Catching Fire. The prequel explores the 50th Hunger Games, decades before Wiress returns to the arena during the Third Quarter Quell, offering a peek at her before the experiences that shaped her later life. Hawke acknowledged that Plummer’s limited screen time left her with little established characterization to reproduce directly.

Rather than imitate the older Wiress, Hawke repeatedly read Suzanne Collins’ novel, revisited the films, and immersed herself in the screenplay to understand the younger victor. She was particularly interested in Wiress having survived the Games without killing anyone, which is an extraordinary distinction in a competition designed to make violence unavoidable.

That moral resilience became central to her interpretation, allowing Hawke to approach a familiar franchise character with the same interest in what remains unseen that made her wedding photographs unexpectedly meaningful.
