Matthew Rhys had added another feather to his cap by making history at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards. The actor made waves this year by playing Tom Loftis as Widow’s Bay took the spotlight. While critics lauded its comedy and strong performances, audiences embraced the series just as enthusiastically.
With nearly 19 Emmy nominations, Widow’s Bay was one of the night’s major contenders. Rhys, meanwhile, had an especially memorable evening, taking home multiple honors for his performance. And with the win, the actor has set a new record.
Matthew Rhys’ historic Emmy night
Matthew Rhys won the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Later, he got on stage again to receive his second Emmy of the night for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. This made him the first man to win two lead-acting trophies on the same night.
His first win was back in 2018, when the actor won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in the spy drama The Americans. With that, the actor set another record by becoming the first actor in the history of the Emmys to have won the lead acting Emmy across all three genres. During the acceptance speech, he had much praise and appreciation for the Showrunner, Katie Dippold.
"Her genius really does live in the recesses of her disturbed brain," Rhys said.

This is an incredible win for the actor as well as the comedy-horror show. Widow’s Bay was previously praised by famed director Guillermo del Toro and author Stephen King. So, it was not a surprise that the show won 14 of its nominations, surpassing The Studio’s 13 wins from last year.
Now, what fans are looking to is the series’ return for season 2.
Widow’s Bay will return for season 2
Widow’s Bay was a massive success upon its release, and Apple TV+ quickly recognized its potential. The second season of the show was renewed even before the end of Season 1. While a release date has not been announced yet, the show could likely be expected in late 2027 or perhaps 2028.

The show ended with the shocking revelation of Mayor Tom Loftis’ son Evan's identity. So, it will be an excruciating wait until Season 2 premieres, especially considering the complicated Season 1 finale. Now, with a historic Emmy sweep, Matthew Rhys and the cast and crew of Widow's Bay have much to celebrate, while fans will eagerly await his return as Tom Loftis in Season 2.
